Soul: New Pixar Short Reveals 22's Reason for Hating Earth | CBR

A new Disney+ short will explore the mindset of one of Soul's main characters.

Set before the events of Soul, 22 vs. Earth features the return of Tina Fey as 22. The contrary soul defies the rules of the Great Beyond and enlists five other souls in an attempt at rebellion. However, the end result leads to her having a revelation about the meaning of life.

"While making 'Soul,' we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie," said Kevin Nolting, who directed the film. "'22 vs. Earth' was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material."

"I think the new souls make the short so fun—the contrast of their pure innocence and delight with the cynical expectations of 22," Nolting continued. "The other new souls are what 22 once was before she took another path—purely innocent, blank slates to be guided by the counselors in their mostly uneventful journey to the earth portal. 22 sees an opening in that and attempts to guide them herself into her way of thinking."

Soul focused on middle school teacher Joe Gardner, whose soul is separated from his body after a near-death experience. Joe and 22 work together to get back to Earth, learning some profound truths in the process. Soul debuted on Disney+ last Christmas, foregoing a theatrical release due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic -- with Pixar's upcoming film Luca receiving the same treatment.

Directed by Kevin Nolting, 22 vs. Earth stars Tina Fey as 22. It will premiere on Disney+ on April 30.
