Batman Beyond: 10 Things You Didn't Know Happened To Terry After The Series Ended

When Batman Beyond was first released, a lot of Batman fans didn’t really know what to expect from the series. Really, the only animated Batman series that fans had come to know around that time was the iconic Batman: The Animated Series.

So when fans were introduced to a much older Bruce Wayne, a young punk named Terry McGinnis, and an entirely new Gotham, it was a lot to take in. Fortunately, and completely unexpectedly, Batman Beyond became one of the biggest hits in Batman history. But what happened after the series came to an end? Where did Terry go after Batman Beyond?

10 Became Comic Book Canon

Following in the footsteps of Harley Quinn, another Batman character that was originally created for an animated series, Terry Mcginnis stepped right off of the screen and into the hallowed panels of DC Comics. And much like Harley Quinn, this beloved character, despite his television origins, was here to stay.

A fact that came as a great relief to many Batman Beyond fans who felt that Terry’s time as the Batman had ended way too prematurely. Thankfully, Terry’s time donning the mantle was far from over as he would be seen time and time again in multiple variations of the DC multiverse.

9 He Time Travelled…. A LOT

What good is having a hero from the future if they aren’t going to be sent back in time at some point? Sure, in the animated series, fans watched as Terry met heroes like Static Shock and Bruce Wayne’s Batman back in his prime, but that simply was not enough time travel for Terry.

Throughout the course of the comics, Terry would go back in time to save the world numerous times.

If there was ever any doubt that Bruce Wayne had retained his ruthlessness over the years, well, he certainly proved it with this stunt. During this particular ploy, Bruce pretended to be taken over by a telepathic implant that made him lose it and kill Terry’s brother, Matt. In order to save Matt and Bruce, Terry had to travel back in time to stop the villain that had set the implant.

However, this was all just a ruse to get Terry to go back in time and save a young version of his father. This young version would be so inspired by Terry’s Batman that he would one day become the whistleblower that took down Powers Technology. A choice that would cost him his life.

7 Died

During the events of Future’s End, Terry, in the place of Bruce Wayne, was sent back in time in order to stop Bruce’s intervention, Brother Eye, from going online and subsequently destroying the world. During his trip back, however, he missed his landing timeframe and ended up landing five years after Brother Eye had already been online.

Of course, hijinks ensue and Terry has to battle to set things right. While he does his best, Terry is eventually killed during this event and leaves the mantle of Batman to one Tim Drake.

6 Fought Hush

Throughout Terry’s time as Batman, he would see many of Batman’s old villains and allies pop up. However, when one of Batman’s greatest enemies pops up in Terry’s time, he is left to try to put the pieces together and stop a psychotic killer. During Bruce’s time as Batman, Hush was nothing to be taken lightly, but when he returned to Gotham decades later, even Bruce is stumped as to how it could be possible.

It's eventually revealed that this version of Hush was created by none other than Amanda Waller in an attempt to clone Dick Grayson in order to keep the Batman legacy alive. What is it with this woman and cloning the Bat-Family?

5 Fought Dana’s Brother

Fans of Batman Beyond will likely recognize Dana as Terry’s long-time girlfriend. Who they likely won’t recognize is Dana’s brother, Doug. During the course of the “10,000 Clowns” arc of the Batman Beyond comics, Terry discovers that not only has Doug joined the Jokerz, but he’s found them highly unorganized in the chaos they wish to sew.

So, Doug declares himself the Joker King and unites all the Joker gangs as well as begins organizing attacks all over Gotham. Though Terry tries to Save Dana’s brother from himself, Doug eventually dies before Terry gets the chance to save him.

4 Got His Own Robin

By the time he takes up the mantle of Batman and starts protecting the city, Gotham has been without a Batman for a long time. But, at that point, Gotham has been without a Robin for even longer.

Well, after Terry takes up the mantle it doesn’t take long for a new Robin to appear in the form of Terry’s younger brother, Matt. Not only does Matt join the fight against crime by his brother’s side, but he’s also trained by Bruce Wayne himself.

3 Fought The Joker

Not to be outdone by some of Batman’s other villains that had made reappearances during Terry’s tenure as Batman, Joker decides to play a little joke on the new Batman and Robin. After brutally murdering dozens of members of the Jokerz gang for using his name and ‘copyright infringement’, Joker sets his sights on the new Robin with his trusty crowbar in hand.

To make it even more of an event, Joker livestreams what he believes will be history repeating itself in a most brilliant and hilarious fashion.

2 Helps Create A New Bat-Family

During Terry’s time as Batman, Gotham begins to see the resurgence of the Bat-Family. Not only has Batman returned, but he eventually brings Robin back with him. Beyond that, however, Gotham also meets a brand new version of Batwoman as well.

It is later revealed that this new version of Batwoman has closer ties to the Bat-Family than anyone expected when she takes off her mask and identifies herself as Elainna Grayson, Dick Grayson’s daughter.

1 Reunites The Old Bat-Family

Throughout his tenure as Batman, Terry has faced some truly insurmountable odds. He’s faced off against some of Batman’s greatest villains, both new incarnations and the originals. He’s taken down an entire gang of Jokers. But, perhaps his greatest challenge ever, was reuniting the original Bat-Family.

Sure, as commissioner, Barbara Gordon was always kind of in the picture. But Dick Grayson? Damian Wayne? Those were some pretty hard gets as far as the Bat-Family is concerned, but somehow, Terry managed to get both of them back in the Batcave with Bruce.
