Batwoman: Safiyah Finds a New Enemy | CBR

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for "Bat Girl Magic," the latest episode of Batwoman, which aired Sunday on The CW.

Mary has caught Safiyah's eye, and that means nothing but trouble for the Hamilton Dynamics heiress. In "Bat Girl Magic," the latest episode of Batwoman, Alice traveled to the island of Coryana with plans to punish Safiyah for killing her sister Kate. During this confrontation, Alice blamed Mary for breaking Coryana's cardinal rule: revealing the secret of the Coryana desert rose to the outside world. In response, Safiyah hired hitman Victor Zsasz to kill Mary, leading to a showdown between the Scarlet Knight and the scarred assassin.

Due to her actions in "Prior Criminal History," Alice found herself abducted and woke up on Coryana in "Bat Girl Magic." There, she was brought before Safiyah, who treated her to a dinner and a stroll instead of killing her outright. Safiyah expressed her disappointment in Alice for not only leaving, which is strictly against Coryana's rules, but also for exposing the curative properties of the Coryana desert rose to the world.

"I've forgiven you for what you did all those years ago, which is why it's going to be much harder forgiving you for this," Safiyah told Alice. "You exposed the secret of the desert rose to the world. Coryana is the Garden, and I am its keeper. My family has dedicated lifetimes to protecting its secret. History is littered with colonizers who come with their false ideals and pillage for their own profit: the African diamond trade, oil in the Middle East. Coryana is no different. Our garden will be ravaged, and our peaceful island will cease to exist."

"Well maybe you should have thought about that before you blew up my sister's jet," Alice retorted.

"I didn't bring down her jet," Safiyah insisted, only for Alice to shoot back, "And I didn't expose the secret of the desert rose to the world. I gave it to just one person, and she did the rest."

"And who is this person?" Safiyah demanded, her voice laced with icy rage.

Although the episode cut away to show Mary and Luke in the Batcave, Alice must have pinned the blame on her, for Safiyah quickly put out a hit on her. Zsasz found Mary at her secret clinic shortly thereafter, just as she discovered that the desert rose cures more than the toxin: it cures everything.

Moments before Zsasz's arrival, Mary's assistant arrived with CT scans that showed a patient's miraculous recovery from Stage 3 cancer. When she realized the patient had received the desert rose concoction due to a toxic bat bite, Mary put two-and-two together and called Ryan and Luke. They crosschecked the patient's name with the list of hits Ryan retrieved from Zsasz's apartment, only to discover she was on it.

"I think this is a list of Hamilton's record of everyone who was treated for the bat toxin," Mary explained.

"Then it should have treated the toxin, not an incurable cancer," Ryan pointed out.

"Yeah, well, the desert rose is a universal cure all," Mary replied. "So I knew it would treat the symptoms of the bat bite. I never dreamed it would cure people's per-existing conditions!"

"Meaning what? That every person on this list has a miracle drug running through their veins?" Luke mused.

Mary never got to answer him, because Zsasz showed up to her clinic in that moment. She managed to fight him off and flee, which didn't stop him but bought her enough time for Batwoman to show up. Zsasz and Batwoman faced off, but Ryan was ultimately able to overcome the hitman, saving Mary for the moment.

Zsasz may not have been successful, but the takeaway is abundantly clear: Safiyah wants Mary Hamilton dead. Although the episode never reveals Safiyah's reaction to Zsasz's failure to kill Mary, Safiyah probably won't give up that easily. Mary will likely remain in hot water until such time as Team Batwoman is able to plead their case to Safiyah, or that Safiyah realizes Alice wasn't telling the whole truth about the way Mary was able distribute the desert rose cure on such a large scale. For now, then, Mary remains in danger.

Airing Sundays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW, Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, Rachel Skarsten as Alice, Meagan Tandy as Sophie Moore, Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox, Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane and Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton-Kane.
