Charmed star Madeleine Mantock, who portrays Macy Vaughn in The CW's reboot series, promises its upcoming season will make more time to explore social justice issues.
"For Season 3… I’m seeing that extension of what positive representation can be, in terms of like, how big is the pool of the underrepresented we're choosing to show here," Mantock told Slice. "I do want to tell these stories and that means I have to give of myself and be brave about it," she added. "When it’s not entirely fiction, it costs something, y’know."
The Charmed One added, "Our writers and producers and showrunners -- people in charge in making those decisions -- are incredibly open to what we would like to see. They’re really doing what they can to make those things happen."
Mantock shared that Charmed always planned to be "inclusive and forward-thinking," and "was never coy about its social commentary;" but, there were some moments where it didn't keep these elements at the story's forefront. However, the actor clarified that Season 3 will bring a lot of positive representation to the small screen. "In terms of the racial element, we haven’t necessarily delved that deeply into it -- up until now," she stated.
While discussing how hard it can be to delve into social commentary about race on a show when it connects to personal experience, Mantock hinted that Macy's character explores her connection to her identities in Charmed's newest season.
"Yes, this might be a scene that happens to Macy, and it’s on page 12, and you could look at it that way -- but when you are kind of connected to your experience and you’re connected to your work, your character -- like, when the lines start to blur," she said. "I get apprehensive, but I have to give myself over to it because I’ve said time and time again, those are the stories I want to tell. It just happens this story is similar in ways to the things I’ve experienced, either in my life or workplaces."
