The next wave of DC Showcase animated shorts will focus on a new group of DC Comics characters, including Blue Beetle and Kamandi.
The shorts will be released as bonus features on upcoming DC Universe Movies, beginning with Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth! Written by Paul Giacoppo (Young Justice, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes) and directed by Matt Peters (Justice League Dark: Apokolips War), the short focuses on the titular teen survivor and will be attached to Justice Society: World War II.
Other shorts planned for release include a standalone Constantine feature and a short based on The Losers. Created by Andy Diggle and Jock for DC's now-defunct Vertigo imprint, The Losers focuses on a group of mercenaries who intend to clear their names after being framed by the CIA. The Losers was adapted into a film in 2010, featuring an all-star cast, including Idris Elba and Zoe Saldana.
The DC Showcase shorts first began as bonus features for DC's animated movies in 2010, spotlighting lesser-known characters within DC's canon. The first wave of shorts included a Green Arrow short written by Young Justice showrunner Greg Weisman and starring Neal McDonough as the Emerald Archer. The DC Showcase made a return in 2019 with a series of shorts that included the interactive Batman: Death in the Family film, which presented its audience with a multitude of endings.
Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, Justice Society: World War II stars Stana Katic as Wonder Woman, Matt Bomer as The Flash, Elysia Rotaru as Black Canary, Chris Diamantopoulos as Steve Trevor, Omid Abtahi as Hawkman, Matthew Mercer as Hourman, Armen Taylor as Jay Garrick, Liam McIntyre as Aquaman, Ashleigh LaThrop as Iris West, Geoffrey Arend as Charles Halstead/Advisor, Keith Ferguson as Dr. Fate and Darin De Paul as Roosevelt. The film is due to be released in spring 2021.
