Actor Anthony Mackie weighed in on whether or not Falcon or Bucky will be the new permanent owner of Captain America's shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
When asked if Falcon/Sam Wilson is taking up the Captain America mantle in the Disney+ series, Mackie confirmed that the role is still open in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "No, we don't know that yet," he replied on The Jess Cagle Show via Comicbook.com.
"The show, the idea of the show [referring to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier] is basically... At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield, but at no point in time, did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America."
Since Marvel Studios/Disney+ debuted a trailer for the upcoming series and released show merchandise, fans speculated which friend of Cap would wield the shield now that Steve Rogers has officially retired. Within the exclusive first look at the series shared on Disney's 2020 Investor Day, Mackie's character, Sam Wilson, said, "The legacy of that shield is complicated."
Mackie further hinted that the series is less about who will own the shield and more about exploring what the shield and its affiliated duties and power mean. "So the show walks the line of who is going to take up the shield and who's going to be Captain America if Steve isn't coming back," he added.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously stated that the show is "grounded." Feige described the upcoming series as "more of a reflection of the real world." He added, "Considering it was written last year, it has only become more relevant and more poignant for our time."
