The Marvel Cinematic Universe's team of space-faring misfits will be back to complete their trilogy of films. Filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will reportedly begin later this year.
Principal photography on the movie is set to begin in the later half of 2021 and will take place in the United Kingdom, according to Murphy's Multiverse. This would be a return to the location used to film the first movie in the trilogy, although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was shot primarily in Atlanta, GA.
The main cast of Guardians Vol. 3 is currently in Australia shooting their appearances in another MCU movie, Thor: Love and Thunder. This will presumably serve as a bridge to their own story, as the characters were last seen in Avengers: Endgame departing Earth with Chris Hemsworth's Thor. Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn has confirmed that he is consulting on Thor: Love and Thunder where the characters from his own franchise are concerned.
Meanwhile, Gunn is shooting for his HBO Max series Peacemaker, which spins off of the upcoming DCEU film The Suicide Squad. As revealed in Disney's Investor Day announcements, Guardians Vol. 3 is planned for release in 2023, and was initially said to be eyeing February 2021 to begin filming. A later schedule may have been required to accommodate the cast and crew's other projects.
Regarding the plot of the third Guardians of the Galaxy film, few details have been revealed, but Dave Bautista's Drax the Destroyer, Pom Klementieff's Mantis, Chris Pratt's Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Vin Diesel's Groot, Bradley Cooper/Sean Gunn's Rocket Raccoon, and Karen Gillan's Nebula have confirmed their return. Gunn has also indicated that Rocket Raccoon's tragic backstory will feature prominently, and that the delay caused by his temporary departure from the MCU has not affected his original vision for the Guardians Vol. 3.
Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. The film arrives in theaters May 6, 2022.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to begin filming in 2021. Its current release date is targeted for 2023.
