As Marvel Comics prepares to celebrate Deadpool's 30th anniversary, the publisher has unveiled a new batch of variant covers by the Merc with a Mouth's co-creator, Rob Liefeld.
Beginning in March, a total of 30 Liefeld variants featuring Deadpool will ship with various Marvel titles, starting with the Deadpool Nerdy 30 #1 special. Back in December, Marvel also unveiled variants for such books as X-Men Legends #4, X-Force #18, Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25, Immortal Hulk #45 and Venom #25. The House of Ideas has now revealed five more variants as part of Liefeld's Deadpool anniversary series for Fantastic Four #33, Guardians of the Galaxy #13, Guardians of the Galaxy #15 and currently unspecified issues of Captain America and Iron Man.
"When the opportunity to illustrate 30 variant covers commemorating Deadpool's 30th anniversary came up, I literally jumped at the chance!" said Liefeld. "I went over a quick checklist with the Marvel brass and I think we've picked a great array of Marvel's biggest and brightest stars to pair with the Mighty Merc on over 30 unique covers! It's giving me a chance to draw Deadpool with Marvel stars I've never drawn before, like Miles Morales and Silver Surfer! This is going to be grand, I hope the fans enjoy this special event. It’s a blast putting it all together!"
Created by Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Wade Wilson/Deadpool first appeared in February 1991's New Mutants #98. Known for his fourth wall-breaking antics, the character has gone on to become a favorite among Marvel fans, even starring in a duology of solo films set within 20th Century Fox's X-Men film universe. A third Deadpool film is on the way, and will be set within Disney and Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe.
