The CW's Nancy Drew will soon be bringing Tom Swift's character to life in the series, which might lead the 1910 adventurer to have his own show.
Tian Richards (Dumplin, Being Mary Jane) will star as Tom Swift in an upcoming Nancy Drew episode that serves as a backdoor pilot for a spinoff series, as confirmed by Deadline. Richards will "crash Nancy’s (Kennedy McMann) investigations, an event which Nancy interprets as supernatural and Tom believes to be cosmically paranormal."
However, The CW confirmed that this appearance is not a "traditional backdoor pilot" as their creative team is also currently scripting a separate pilot episode for the series.
Tom Swift will "follow the serialized adventures of its titular Black, gay, billionaire inventor (Richards) who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hell-bent on stopping him. Tom’s missions will require his genius and flair for innovation guided by love, romance, friendship and the mysteries of the universe yet-unsolved."
The series will be co-created by Nancy Drew's Melinda Hsu Taylor and Noga Landau. Empire writer Cameron Johnson will also be creating alongside Taylor and Landau. At the time of this writing, the series is still under development.
While it's unknown at this time which episode will star Richards, Swift's character is the latest character from the Stratemeyer Syndicate to join Nancy Drew. Season 2's premiere episode saw the likes of the iconic Bobbsey Twins joining Drew's crime-solving ranks.
Co-showrunner Melinda Hsu Taylor previously stated that Season 2 will feature more standalone episodes, focusing on the payoff of character development. "We have more of a kind of chapter feeling," she wrote. "But you can also drop in to literally any episode this season and feel like, 'I'm getting a really compelling and enjoyable story I'm getting a really compelling and enjoyable story ... I feel like I got that story's end also in these 42 minutes, but now I want to keep watching because there's this other stuff going on in the background."
Richards is best known for film roles in Netflix's Dumplin, A Bad Mom's Christmas and 2017's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. He also starred in the television series Being Mary Jane and The Neighborhood.
Nancy Drew stars Kennedy McMann, Tunji Kasim, Maddison Jaizani, Scott Wolf, Riley Smith and Alex Saxon. New episodes debut on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
