Peacemaker: Production on HBO Max's Suicide Squad Spinoff Has Begun

Filming is officially underway on HBO Max's Peacemaker, a spinoff of writer-director James Gun's upcoming DC film The Suicide Squad.

Gunn made the announcement himself in a post to Twitter. "Five months ago, while quarantining, I started writing a TV series, mostly for fun, in between Guardians drafts and cutting The Suicide Squad," Gunn explained. "I wrote the first season of Peacemaker in eight weeks. And now, here I am, on the first day of shooting. Life is surreal."

Known for his work on Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy films, Gunn is currently helming The Suicide Squad -- a reboot of director David Ayer's 2016 film Suicide Squad -- for DC and Warner Bros., with the film slated to release in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously this coming August. The Suicide Squad boasts an all-star cast, including John Cena as the comic book character Christopher Smith/Peacemaker.

This past September, it was announced that the former WWE Champion would be reprising his role as Christopher Smith for an eight-episode Peacemaker series on HBO Max, which will delve into the eponymous character's origins. The show lacks a premiere date, with production expected to last from this month until June. Gunn has written all eight of the series' episodes, and will direct a few of them as well. As Gunn alludes to in his post, following The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, his next major superhero project will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel.
