Though their time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to an end, directors Joe and Anthony Russo will use the experiences from their Marvel Studios films to shape the sequel to Extraction.
"I think Joe and Anthony, that whole AGBO team, are brilliant in that building upon the Marvel universe aspect where a lot of these films connect and intersect in their journeys with characters," Extraction director Sam Hargrave told Collider during an interview. "They're building on that model in the Extraction universe and there is a lot of opportunity to follow characters that people have shown an affinity for and sounds like they want to know more about."
The Russo Brothers had previously hinted at their plans for a universe of Extraction films during a panel at CCXP Worlds last year, which was moderated by Collider's Steven Weintraub. "We’re trying to find more interesting ways to tell these stories and cross-pollinate them. We’re big fans of just forging new paths in narrative," Joe Russo said. "I think what makes that a compelling element to the Extraction universe is it is a global franchise telling global stories, and we’d like to diversify the point of view in those movies."
Extraction was based on the graphic novel Ciudad, which the Russos helped develop the story for. It follows mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) as he attempts to rescue a boy named Ovi (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) from the clutches of a drug lord, unaware that Ovi is the son of the drug lord's rival. Extraction was one of the most-watched films from Netflix, with a sequel being greenlit shortly after its release.
The Russo Brothers directed several of the MCU's most pivotal films, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Their next film project is Cherry, based on the novel by Nico Walker and starring Tom Holland. They will also helm The Gray Man for Netflix, which is based on the novel by Mark Greaney and features a star-studded cast including Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.
Directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, Extraction stars Chris Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Manoj Bajpayee, Randeep Hooda, Pankaj Tripathi, Derek Luke, Marc Donato and David Harbour. It is currently available on Netflix.
