Whether people became fans thanks to the movie, the video game, or the graphic novels that started it all, Scott Pilgrim has huge cult following. The story hinges on Scott Pilgrim trying to win the hand of Ramona Flowers by surviving battle after battle with her evil exes.
But the story is an interesting exercise in testing the likability of characters, of how people connect with those characters. Just because Scott is ostensibly the main character of the story doesn't mean that he's the most likable or relatable person in it. In fact, the opposite might be true.
7 Scott Pilgrim Can Be Pretty Intense
While Scott Pilgrim is technically the main character of the story, he is by no means a hero. Throughout the narrative, he repeatedly treats many of his closest friends terribly. Both Kim Pine and Stephen Stills have the misfortune of being in a band with Scott. Even worse, Kim used to be his girlfriend. She still harbors a lot of resentment from their time together. No one is treated worse by him than Knives Chau, who he actively cheats on.
By the end of the story, Scott had supposedly learned a lot about himself and was in the process of changing his manipulative, selfish ways. But that doesn't change the fact that for the vast majority of the story he was an incredibly unlikable jerk.
6 Ramona Flowers Throws Down
Meeting Ramona Flowers set the entire story in motion for Scott. He immediately falls in love with her, or at least what he believes to be love. If anything, it's probably more like a weird 20 something infatuation that will probably not amount to much.
As Scott fought his way through Ramona's League of Evil Exes, fans learned more about her history. Many of her exes had legitimate grudges as she cheated on them. The few exes that she didn't cheat on she did use for other selfish and superficial reasons. The Katayanagi Twins got the worst of it. She dated these two brothers at the same time, secretly cheating on them with each other. It was a reprehensible move on her part.
5 Stephen Stills Is Focused On Making It
As the lead singer and guitarist of Sex Bob-Omb, Stephen Stills felt like the band was always on the verge of breaking through. That was true to an extent. They were actually pretty good, although their sound improved dramatically when "Young" Neil replaced Scott on bass guitar. But the reality is that Stephen's focus on Sex Bob-Omb made him incredibly single minded with little attention paid to anything else.
Stephen seemed like a decent guy but it was hard to tell as all he ever talked about was the band. He needed that laser focus to take Sex Bob-Omb to the next level. That being said, his non-stop band talk became insufferable quite quickly.
4 "Young" Neil Is Super Into Nintendo
Neil Nordegraf, better known to fans as "Young" Neil, was Stephen's roommate, a pseudo-roadie for Sex Bob-Omb and a friend of Scott's. How he earned the nickname "Young" has never been openly discussed but it's implied in the graphic novels that he can be a bit rude due to his young age. In those books, "Young" Neil has a lot of growing up to do before he can drop the moniker.
In the movie, "Young" Neil was presented as a quiet, nice guy. But it's hard to get a full read on him because he didn't say or do that much. Honestly, "Young" Neil was a bit of a cypher, particularly in the movie. But adding in his graphic novel personality seems to indicate he's a recovering jerk.
3 Kim Pine Has Something To Say
It's hard not to feel bad for Kim Pine. First, she was dating Scott for a very brief period in high school. They broke up when Scott's family moved away to Toronto. Eventually, her family followed suit but she and Scott never rekindled their romance.
Then, Kim ended up in Sex Bob-Omb with Stephen and Scott. It was awkward and difficult as she harbors some confusing feelings for Scott, many of which lean towards anger and resentment. Scott never really acknowledged this until the final moments before fighting Gideon Graves the second time. Kim's sarcastic comments and dismissive glances, both generally directed at Scott, make her impossible to not like.
2 Wallace Wells Wants To Help And Judge
Out of all of the main Scott Pilgrim characters, Wallace Wells might be the biggest secret nice guy of them all. Few people are as supportive of Scott in some very tangible ways. He lets Scott live in his apartment, at least until Pilgrim pushes his goodwill too far. But he's also the one who sat there and listened to Scott whine about women endlessly. That includes Ramona, Envy, and Knives. Wallace was Scott's best friend.
Having Scott cluttering up his apartment didn't stop Wallace from living his life the way he saw fit. It also didn't stop him from accurately slamming Scott, and anyone else in his line of fire, whenever possible. At times, he seemed like the only sane person in the story.
1 Knives Chau Really Likes The Band
No one gets screwed over by Scott more than Knives Chau. At the point they started dating, Scott was in his mid-20s and Knives was a 17 year old high school student. Kim was one of the first people to mock Scott for this as was his sister Stacey. It was a bit of a scandal among their group of friends.
As it turned out, Knives was just a really nice person, not to mention an impressive hand-to-hand combatant. Scott met Ramona while he was still dating Knives. Rather than being an adult and breaking things off with Knives, he continued to string her along while he explored his relationship with Flowers. That alone made her one of the most relatable characters in all of Scott Pilgrim.
