Servant : Rupert Grint & Nell Tiger Free Tease Season 2 Twists

The hunt is on for Jericho Turner and Leanne Grayson. In Servant Season 1's finale, Leanne disappeared into the night without a word to the Turners. When she left, the living, breathing Jericho went missing as well -- but it is unclear how, or why the realistic baby doll that opened the season returned to his crib. Now, in Season 2, Sean and Dorothy Turner will do whatever it takes to get their son back, and they're bringing Dorothy's brother Julian along for the ride.

Speaking to CBR, Rupert Grint (Julian) and Nell Tiger Free (Leanne) promised their characters have some big turns in store. As Julian begins to lose control and question his own beliefs, Leanne finds her voice and becomes "borderline unrecognizable" from the girl who appeared on the Turners' doorstep in the Season 1 premiere. Grint and Free also teased more drama and action for the show's sophomore outing, how the characters get pulled closer together and more.

CBR: How do we see Julian and Leeane continue to evolve in Season 2?

Rupert Grint: Yeah, I mean, there's a lot. It feels like a very different season, this one. Straight off the bat, and the dynamic changes now that Dorothy sees the doll as a doll. The control is kind of slipping away from Julian and Sean, and with that, everything is ramped up.

I think, yeah, they're faced with a lot of things. I mean, they're people that are refusing to grieve, and with that comes out a lot of bad things in Julian. He's struggling with a lot: religion and what he believes. He kind of unravels throughout this series, and it's been really fun to track that.

Nell Tiger Free: Yeah, I mean, Leanne definitely takes a big turn. There's a big shift in her character and by the end of Season 2, she's borderline unrecognizable from the Leanne that we met in Season 1 Episode 1. So I think just watching her grow and change, not only as a character, or maybe an antagonist, but also just as a girl, and she discovers a lot of new things about herself and new things about the world. Yeah, it's just a big shift, and it's a lot more drama, a lot more action, a bit of romance and violence. It takes off! [laughs]

What was something you had a chance to do in Season 2 that perhaps you couldn't in Season 1?

Grint: Well, yeah, I think we see Julian a lot more in this season. I mean, he's an unusual character, because he can come and go. He has a very different orbit. But this time, there's so much going on that he's close by a lot of the time. So, yeah, with that -- he's just very conflicted, I think, in this. There's a lot going on with this whole bravado thing, [which] is quite a thin veil, I think. We see that more and more as a real coping mechanism for him, and he's really a guy on the edge. Yeah, it's been fun, but also, you never really know with a show like this. You never really quite know where it's heading, so it's a real thrill.

Free: For me, I think Leanne just takes such a big turn in Season 2 that I got to explore things I certainly didn't get to in Season 1. Season 1, she's quiet, she's meek, she's reserved. She's sort of a presence that's always kind of in the background, but she's still very much there, and in Season 2, we get to see her be pulled to the forefront of herself a little bit more. She gets to be a bit of a badass, so I'm really excited for everyone to see! It was really fun to play.

Starring Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, Nell Tiger Free and Rupert Grint, the second season of Servant premieres Friday, Jan. 15 on Apple TV+, with subsequent episodes debuting each Friday.
