Servant: Sean’s Curse Is Actually Leprosy | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Servant Season 2, Episode 1, "Doll," which aired Friday on Apple TV+.

Of all of the strange occurrences that transpired in Season 1 of Apple TV+'s Servant, the most nauseating were the mysterious afflictions that befell grieving father Sean Turner. After removing and destroying a creepy homemade straw cross that nanny Leanne Grayson placed over baby Jericho's crib, Sean began experiencing strange bodily responses. He loses his sense of taste and begins finding random, painful splinters all over his body. By the end of the season, he is horrified to discover that he is losing his sense of touch, burning himself over the open flame of his stove.

In the Servant Season 2 premiere, "Doll," Sean makes a shocking discovery that may confirm what condition he has. It may also give credence to the alleged supernatural abilities possessed by Leanne.

As the episode starts, Sean feels the debilitating effects of the apparent curse. While dealing with a panicked Dorothy and covering Julian and his tracks, Sean manages to bandage and treat the self-inflicted burn on his hand. In one particularly disgusting scene, he cuts into the blisters and drains them, still appearing to feel nothing.

Later, during an inspection of Leanne's now empty room, Sean finds her copy of the Bible. He is horrified when he finds his name written in the margins on a page labelled "The Test of Leprosy." This Bible passage, specifically "Leviticus 13," deals with identifying and diagnosing leprosy, but in this case, it appears to be a curse dealt by Leanne.

Leanne used this Bible method before in Servant Season 1. After feeling slighted by Dorothy, Leanne wrote her name in the Bible margins, and the next morning Dorothy woke up with a cold sore, which was a nightmare for the television reporter.

This discovery has many disturbing implications. For one, it confirms Uncle George's claims of Leanne's powers to "punish" others, which was implied in the Season 1 finale after Sean confided his symptoms to him. This specific disease also holds various biblical connotations about holiness. While nerve damage and numbness are common signs of leprosy, the spontaneous splinters are not, so it's still a mystery what is fully happening to Sean, but it does seem Leanne is behind it.

Starring Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, Nell Tiger Free and Rupert Grint, the second season of Servant premieres Friday, Jan. 15 on Apple TV+, with subsequent episodes debuting each Friday.
