HBO's iconic series Sex and the City is continuing its saga with a revival series on HBO Max titled And Just Like That... Since the original series concluded in 2004, the franchise has spawned two feature films and a prequel series called The Carrie Diaries, which lasted just one season. But fans of the series have been waiting over a decade for the continuing adventures of Carrie Bradshaw and friends.
The recent release of the teaser trailer for And Just Like That... confirmed that stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis will be returning to reprise their iconic roles. However, while it has yet to be officially confirmed by HBO Max, it appears that Kim Cattrall will not be returning to play fan-favorite Samantha Jones.
Jessica Parker confirmed Cattrall's absence from the revival after posting the teaser trailer on her Instagram. In an interaction with a fan in the comment section, she wrote, "Samantha isn't part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do."
Cattrall's absence from the revival should come as no surprise to those who were aware that the actress has no desire to play the Jones again. She's repeatedly stated that she had no interest in returning for a third feature film and didn't seem too keen on being involved with the Sex and the City franchise any longer. To make matters worse, Cattrall has gone public about her issues with Jessica Parker in the years since the films concluded.
Obviously, Cattrall's distance from the franchise will create a big challenge for the new series. While Parker's Carrie Bradshaw is the lead character, her three best friends shared equal screen time and the audience was as invested in their private lives as they were with Carrie's. Samantha Jones especially made waves by showing the wild and erotic side of a woman's sex life, something that was uncommon for TV at the time.
The actress hasn't officially confirmed whether or not she will be involved in And Just Like That..., but she did take to social media to like a post that supported her personal decision not to return. So, like a famous band reuniting without their original drummer, fans of Sex and the City will have to accept the bittersweet pill. Fortunately, Cattrall's absence does create an opportunity for the showrunners to fill her vacancy by potentially introducing a new character for fans of the franchise to attach themselves to.
