Star Trek: Discovery Shows Burnham Shares the Same Philosophy as Captain Kirk

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 12, "That Hope Is You, Part 2," now streaming on CBS All Access.

Earlier in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Emerald Chain leader Osyraa stole the show's titular ship. However, Michael Burnham and Cleveland "Book" Booker weren't about to let Osyraa enact her will and snuck aboard the Discovery to scuttle her plans. In the process, Burnham faced Osyraa and proved she shares the same philosophy as Star Trek's most famous captain: James T. Kirk.

In the Season 3 finale, "That Hope Is You, Part 2," Osyraa intends to use the Discovery to travel to the Verubin Nebula and take all of the dilithium that was recently discovered there. But given the dangers inside the Nebula, traveling there is treacherous. Only Book was able to successfully get to the dilithium planet, and when he refuses to tell Osyraa how to get there, the villainous Orion tortures him in front of Burnham.

Book won't talk, but Osyraa believes he will if Burnham tells him to. Therefore, her primary enforcer, Zareh, inflicts as much pain as he can on Book, before telling Michael that she is currently stuck in "a no-win situation."In answer, Michael defiantly replies she "doesn't believe in those."

This philosophy is one shared by Captain Kirk. In Star Trek: The Original Series and the alternate timeline-set 2009 film Star Trek, Kirk was able to defeat Starfleet's most difficult training exercise, the Kobayashi Maru, by cheating. In the J.J. Abrams-directed film, Kirk was put on trial for his actions, where he defended himself by explaining that, while the test was supposed to trap him in an unwinnable situation, he simply didn't believe in no-win scenarios. Both in the television series and in the Kelvin Timeline film, Kirk has gone to great lengths to achieve the impossible -- and it has often paid off.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 began with Michael spending a year by herself in the future, where she picked up new skills and stopped operating solely as a Starfleet officer. After she joined the Discovery again, she expressed her feelings that she wouldn't be able to follow rules as strictly as she had been a year prior. In "That Hope Is You, Part 2," Burnham uses those abilities to circumvent the rules and save Book, defeating Osyraa and saving the Discovery in the process. Like Kirk, she took risks and she was, ultimately, successful. And the best part is that it's because of this that, after three seasons, she finally finds herself in the captain's chair.

Streaming on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Commander Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly, Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber, David Ajala as Cleveland "Book" Booker, Blu del Barrio as Adira, Ian Alexander as Gray, Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Reno and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou. Seasons 1-3 are currently available to stream on CBS All Access.
