Created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, The Legend of Korra is set in a fictional universe where people can manipulate or bend the four elements — fire, water, earth and air. Among those who possess bending abilities, only one person, also known as the Avatar, has the ability to bend all four elements. Since The Legend of Korra is a story ultimately about ideologies, many characters face conflict and die early in the series.
Every death in The Legend of Korra had its own meaning, and contributed to the storyline for the entire series. While some of the characters chose death, others died while trying to live up to their own ideals and dignity.
10 Tarrlok
Tarrlok was introduced as a manipulative and ambitious politician. As a member of the United Republic Council, Tarrlok presented a likable personality to the general public but was extremely aggressive and corrupt when it came to achieving his goals. Tarrlok's past as the son of the infamous criminal, Yakone, was soon revealed and he met his downfall. While escaping the prison on a speedboat with his brother, Tarrlok committed suicide and also killed Amon.
9 Amon
Leader of the anti-bender revolutionary group, the Equalists, Amon was one of the main antagonists at the beginning of the series. Since he harbored negative feelings towards benders, Amon dedicated his life to de-bend and create equality in the world. Amon's methods were often ruthless, and he used fear to gain control over the benders.
While Amon was strictly against bending, he was a bender himself. The oldest son of the crime master Yakone, Amon's real name was Noatak. After being defeated, Amon and his younger brother, Tarrlok, took a speedboat to escape, but he met his end after Tarrlok ignited the fuel tank and committed murder-suicide.
8 Wan
Wan was the first Avatar and existed around a thousand years before Korra. Before becoming the Avatar, Wan was travelling the world when he encountered Raava and Vaatu. After being deceived by Vaatu, Wan used his firebending skills to help Vaatu escape from Raava.
To repent for his mistake, Wan decided to help Raava and later became the first Avatar by merging with Raava's energy. While Wan physically died a long time back, during Korra's battle with Unalaq and Vaatu, Wan's spirit dissipated forever. This also caused Korra's connection with her past lives to be severed and ended the Avatar cycle.
7 Unalaq
Unalaq was the chief of the Northern and Southern Water Tribes, and one of the main antagonists. As Korra's uncle, Unalaq was her spiritual mentor. However, Unalaq was revealed to be just using Korra to release Vaatu and become the Dark Avatar.
During the battle, Korra's spirit transformed into a huge being of light and went into the material world to fight Unalaq. Korra's spirit then subdued the Dark Avatar and recreated Raava. In the end, Unalaq was killed once Korra defeated them through astral projection.
6 Vaatu
Vaatu was the spirit of darkness and chaos. As a spirit, Vaatu was the first to enter the mortal world. Vaatu had existed for over ten thousand lifetimes, and in 171 AG, he merged its soul with Unalaq and created the Dark Avatar.
After merging with Unalaq, Vaatu battled with Korra to become the Avatar that would lead the world. While it seemed that Vaatu was about to experience complete victory, Korra's astral projection attacked him. Later, with the help of Jinora's spiritual projection, Korra was able to dissipate Vaatu, ultimately eliminating him along with Unalaq.
5 Hou-Ting
Hou-Ting was the sovereign of the Earth Kingdom in The Legend of Korra series. Manipulative and rude, Hou-Ting had a bad temper and was easily angered if things did not go her way. Hou-Ting was also not very fond of the Avatars and played an active role in capturing airbenders.
During the airship crash in Si Wong Desert, Hou-Ting was confronted by the Red Lotus led by Zaheer. Hou-Ting was confident that Zaheer would not hurt a Queen, but Zaheer proved her wrong by using his airbending skills to suffocate and kill her.
4 P'Li
P'Li was introduced as a powerful firebending criminal who was also the love interest of Zaheer. Since P'Li was imprisoned, Zaheer, Ghazan, and Ming-Hua helped her escape to track and defeat Korra. P'Li assisted Zaheer and also re-attempted to kidnap Korra. She also helped Zaheer with Hou-Ting's assassination along with her Red Lotus members.
When Korra decided to give herself up in exchange for the imprisoned airbenders, P'Li shackled Korra and led her towards the airship. However, when reinforcements to help Korra arrived, P'Li asked Zaheer to run away with Korra while she held back Lin and Suyin Beifong. In the end, Suyin was able to kill P'Li by using her metalbending abilities.
3 Ming-Hua
Ming-Hua was arrested and detained for thirteen years in prison until she was liberated by Zaheer and Ghazan. An expert waterbender, Ming-Hua did not have any arms but had tentacle-like water-arms to assist her. After being rescued, Ming-Hua accompanied the Red Lotus to find the Avatar and kidnap her.
Ming-Hua helped Zaheer overthrow the Earth Queen and also fought against Korra to achieve victory. However, during a battle with Mako, Ming-Hua was electrocuted and killed. Mako's lightning bolt caused Ming-Hua's water tendrils to conduct electric currents throughout her body and killed her.
2 Ghazan
After a failed attempt to kidnap Korra, Ghazan was imprisoned along with the other members of the Red Lotus. Zaheer helped Ghazan escape from the prison after thirteen years and embarked on the journey to find Korra once again with P'Li and Ming-Hua. Ghazan was one of the strongest members of the Red Lotus.
While Ghazan portrayed himself as a laid-back character, he was very competitive and even mastered the skill of lavabending. Ghazan committed suicide when he was defeated by Bolin. Since Ghazan did not want to return to the prison, he used his earth and lavabending abilities to collapse the cave and kill himself.
1 Hiroshi Sato
Hiroshi Sato was introduced as the founder of Future Industries and a nonbending industrialist. As a member of the Equalists, Hiroshi was a supporter of the Anti-Bending revolution and created high tech weaponry to fight against benders. During the Battle for Republic City, Hiroshi stood by the Equalists, while his daughter, Asami, supported the benders.
This created a rift between the father and the daughter. After the revolution, Hiroshi was imprisoned for his connection to the Equalists. After spending time in prison, Hiroshi started atoning for his sins and tried to reconcile with his daughter. When Kuvira attacked the city, Hiroshi sacrificed his life by welding Kuvira's enormous mecha suit till the end.
