The Suicide Squad Star Teases the Most Violent, But Moving DCEU Entry Yet

The Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman shared what he loved best about James Gunn's vision.

In an exclusive interview with CBR, Kinnaman reflected on Gunn's "completely different approach" to Task Force X. Compared to 2016's Suicide Squad, Kinnaman said that Gunn's take is "a ridiculous story" that fans will love for its violence, humor and touching moments.

"I mean, I can't wait to see it," the actor told CBR. "When I read the script, like, every page, every page of the script made me laugh. It's just the silliest, most violent, and at times, it's really moving. Just an absolutely ridiculous story. It's... yeah, you know, honestly, I think people are gonna love it. I really do. I think it's gonna be a very, very appreciated film."

Kinnaman will reprise his role as Rick Flag from 2016's Suicide Squad; however, he revealed that Flag won't be the same character that fans saw in David Ayer's film. He shared that Gunn's approach to the film overall gave him a chance to find new ways to portray the Special Forces officer and Suicide Squad leader Rick Flag. "And, [Rick Flag] became, I think, he became a slightly sillier version, slightly less jaded. Maybe a little bit more naive. And, and a lot funnier version of the character," the actor shared.

In December, director James Gunn confirmed that The Suicide Squad has an R-Rating. Although he's been responsive to fans on social media throughout the last couple of months, he's shied away from revealing plot details. However, on Jan. 18, Gunn confirmed that he's "a hair's-breadth from being completely finished" with the project.

The tenth film set in the DCEU will feature several returning cast members from 2016's Suicide Squad, but will also be debuting several characters from DC Comics that have yet to make a big-screen debut, including Idris Elba's Bloodsport, Peter Capaldi's The Thinker and Pete Davidson's Blackguard.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Steve Agee as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid. The film arrives in theaters and HBO Max Aug. 6.
