According to the Umbrella Academy canon, the Sparrow Academy came into existence following a change in the timeline caused by their Umbrella Academy counterparts. The main difference between the two sets of siblings is that their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargeeves, believes the Sparrow Academy group is made up of a better set of children.

Following the Season 2 finale of The Umbrella Academy, the show's music supervisor Jen Malone revealed why she chose certain songs to score the eventful season. "One thing I was kind of excited to bring to the show, you know, [was] to be able to sprinkle in some more contemporary songs," Malone said at the time. "Because [showrunner Steve Blackman] is just always open to anything and everything." Songs used in Season 2 included "Rocket Fuel" by DJ Shadow (Feat. De La Soul), "I'm a Man" by The Spencer Davis Group and "Dancing With Myself" by Billy Idol.

Based on the comic series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Justin H. Min, with Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood, Marin Ireland, Jordan Claire Robbins, Kate Walsh and Colm Feore. Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
