10 Digi-Destined Who Deserve Better Digimon | CBR

The Digi-Destined of Digimon have been through many adventures since their start in 1998. With the reboot series Digimon Adventure 2020, there have already been a few changes to the series, such as the inclusion of multiple new forms; the early inclusion of Pegasusmon; and a new anime evolution for Agumon into BlitzGreymon.

Since these Digimon are changing, it is a chance to look back and see what other changes could be made for the better. From better digivolutions to better partners, there are plenty of changes that could be made to the Digi-Destined partner Digimon and maybe some of these changes will make it into the reboot.

10 Kari (02) Had Gatomon But Deserved Salamon

When both TK and Kari came back for Digimon Adventure 02, there was a lot riding on them as the returning Digi-Destined. Since the story was basically starting from scratch for the new kids, it was the perfect time to have Gatomon step back into Salamon, the rookie form that was denied time in Adventure.

Instead, what fans got was a criminally underpowered, Champion-level Gatomon which didn’t make sense given the context of the overarching story of Adventure 02. This wouldn’t be the last time Kari deserved better, but it started a trend for her character.

9 Ai And Mako Had Impmon But Deserved 2 PetitMamon

Ai and Mako are a pair of twins that aided Impmon on his quest to become a stronger Digimon, even though they are both only 4 years old. As the series went on, it seemed like anybody could get a Digimon partner, including Kazu, Kenta, and Jeri. While it was important for Impmon to learn compassion and love, he doesn’t fit as their Digimon.

A Digimon that is often seen in pairs— such as Pal and Pul from Digimon Adventure V-Tamer PetitMamon fills both the cute factor and the devilish nature that Impmon exudes without needing to be the central focus. And there would be a partner for each child instead of them sharing one.

8 Marcus Had Agumon (2006) but Deserved Any Non-Agumon Digimon

Perhaps one of the most underrated series of the franchise, Data Squad combined plot points from the four prior series to generate its story— including the government forces (like Tamers) and the human combatant (like Frontier)

The most flagrant copying of past seasons was the reuse of Agumon alongside non-goggle-wearing Gogglehead Marcus. Because fans assumed this was just going to be a rehash of Adventure, they opted to skip the season as a whole. With any other Digimon, like Bearmon or Dorumon, to replace Agumon, there may have been a chance for the series.

7 Yolei Had Halsemon but Deserved Flybeemon

Being the girl introduced in Adventure 02, Yolei had to fill the roles of both Mimi and Sora, even though every part of her character screamed something else. She is given the Digi-Egg of Love immediately, which exclusively makes sense because she is a girl character.

Cody and Yolei’s Digi-Eggs should have been switched from the start. Cody was passionate and would have fit the Love crest easily while Yolei, who loves computers and learning, should have had the Digi-Egg of Knowledge. With that Digi-Egg, Hawkmon could digivolve into Flybeemon.

6 Joe Had Vikemon but Deserved Plesiomon

Joe Kido, the future doctor and oldest member of the Adventure Digi-Destined, has had a storied relationship with Gomamon. From not believing the Digimon to be real to blatantly ignoring Gomamon for a long time in Tri, Joe didn’t seem to deserve his partner— but in the end, they proved their love for each other.

When the Tri teens were receiving their Mega evolutions, there was a debate by the fans about Gomamon’s final evolution. While it ended up being Vikemon, Plesiomon makes more sense for Gomamon, the self-described protector of the seas.

5 Yoshi Had Rosemon but Deserved Lotosmon

Another member of Data Squad that was affected by the nostalgia of Adventure. Her partner Lalamon gets two original forms— Lalamon and Sunflomon— then a redesign of Lilymon known as Lilamon. While this was before Mimi received her Mega evolution, fans latched onto Rosemon as the end of Palmon’s canonical line, which would become true later in Tri.

The unfortunate truth is that Lilamon was designed to be a comparison to Lilymon and had a mega evolution created for it called Lotosmon. By keeping in that line, the series could have had its own impact rather than leaning on Adventure’s legacy.

4 Meiko Had Meicoomon but Deserved Mikemon

Meiko was a Digi-Destined introduced as a main character for Tri, and ultimately the catalyst for the events of the series through her Digimon, Meicoomon. Aside from them having almost the same name, Meicoomon doesn’t spend much time alongside Meiko due to its infection.

While Meicoomon was created for Tri, it didn’t necessarily have to be since it could have been replaced with another Digimon, Mikemon, who already had an established presence in the Digimon world. They would even get to keep the theme of the similar names, but easier to tell them apart.

3 Kari (Tri) Had Ophanimon but Deserved LovelyAngemon

The mega digivolution of Kari and Gatomon has always been at the forefront of Digimon debate thanks to the Magnadramon scene in Digimon: The Movie. It is now widely accepted, especially thanks to Tri, that Ophanimon is the “true” mega digivolution of Adventure Gatomon. That was the case until recently when they released the new Digimon, LovelyAngemon.

Coming to small screens everywhere in the Digimon: ReArise mobile game, LovelyAngemon has made the debate of Gatomon’s true mega more difficult. LovelyAngemon also has the benefit of being an immediate fan favorite due to its design and personality in the game.

2 Ken Had Stingmon but Deserved Bucchiemon

While it made sense story-wise, it was a shame for Adventure 02 to do away with Digi-Eggs as digivolution methods after Ken joined the team. As the series notes, his crest is the Crest of Kindness, which would generate the same Digi-Egg. When Wormmon is exposed to the Digi-Egg of Kindness, it digivolves into Bucchiemon

Stingmon is, of course, a fan favorite Digimon, even gaining its own Digivolution line long after the series was over, but the series definitely missed out on having Bucchiemon as a part of the main cast, even for a single episode.

1 Ryo Had Monodramon but Deserved Ryudamon

Ryo is perhaps the most “technically” important character of Digimon, having played a part in the Adventure, Adventure 02, Tri, and Tamers timelines. In the Adventure timeline, he and Ken stopped Milleniumon, which ended up setting up the events of Tri. In the Tamers timeline, he is a national card champion and Rika’s rival, aiding the Tamers in their final battle against the D-Reaper.

His story might be directly tied to Monodramon, but it could have been an interesting change to have paired him with Ryudamon, ending the line with Ouryumon.
