10 Supporting Anime Characters Stronger Than The Protagonist

Anime continues to be an exciting and unpredictable form of entertainment that tells a variety of stories that feel like they’d be impossible anywhere else. There are several factors that make an anime popular and connect with audiences, but a powerful protagonist and cast of characters can go a long way. Sometimes anime heroes can be immensely powerful right out of the gate and others grow to become strong legends.

A hero is often only as competent as those that are around him and it’s not unusual for an anime’s supporting characters to overpower the hero. It’s especially interesting when these supporting characters turn out to be more powerful and a bigger threat than the animes’ own protagonist.

10 Killua Zoldyck’s Nen Mastery Pushes Him Past Gon’s Level

Hunter x Hunter is a consistent anime that tries to do something different in each of its major story arcs to avoid the fatigue and repetition that's so prevalent in shonen series. Hunter x Hunter stars Gon, but his support team represents a varied group of fighters, many of which possess skills that Gon lacks. Killua Zoldyck benefits from a grueling childhood where he was trained by deadly assassins and he’s become a formidable jack of all trades. Gon takes down some very strong opponents, but a lot of the time Killua's assistance is necessary to pull off the victory.

9 Goemon’s Precise Ninja Training Make Him The Greater Threat Than Lupin III

Lupin III has endured for many decades and it features some wonderful deconstructions of archetypal characters, such as how Lupin functions as a gentleman thief. Lupin's schemes typically involve a number of his usual cohorts, whether it's Jigen, Fujiko, or Goemon, who are able to assist in various capacities. Goemon is perhaps smarter and more resourceful than Goemon, but there's no question that Goemon is better in battle and the more skilled fighter. He comes from a long line of accomplished samurai and Goemon has a very dangerous level of talent that Lupin lacks.

8 Teresa Is The Motherly Mentor To Clare In Claymore

Claymore creates a stunning world where humans are hunted by a demonic species of shapeshifters known as Yoma. The response to this results in human-Yoma hybrids that are used as mercenaries to hunt the Yoma.

All of the female warriors that populate the Organization are skilled, but immediately it's made clear that Teresa, the matriarch figure of the group, is the strongest. Teresa may not outlast the rest of the characters in Claymore, but her strength is hard to top and Clare definitely fights in her name.

7 Whis Is An Angel With Immense Powers That Surpass Goku Or A God

Part of the joy in Dragon Ball Super is looking at just how much Goku and his friends have grown and changed since the earliest days of the original Dragon Ball series. Goku has progressively turned into the strongest character in the series and has gained a lead over his friends that only grows higher. However, Dragon Ball Super has introduced new universes and entities that diminish Goku’s power. For instance, Beerus and his accompanying Angel, Whis, have powers that transcend what Goku’s capable of even after he’s gained a grasp on Ultra Instinct. Whis can literally turn back time.

6 Ezra Scarlet Is The Strongest Member Of The Fairy Tail Guild

Fairy Tail stumbles in a way that many shonen series do and its protagonist, Natsu, is not without his faults. However, Fairy Tail does attempt some interesting maneuvers with its supporting characters, and Ezra Scarlet experiences an especially rewarding development. Ezra has respect and loyalty to the rest of her Guild, but she's also easily the most powerful member of the group. She earns her S-class Mage status and while extreme violence may not be the first impulse that comes to her, Ezra has no difficulty defending herself and she's someone that Natsu would flinch at.

5 Hiko Seijuro Is Strong & Ruthless In A Way That Kenshin Can’t Be

There are many anime series that explore the lives and strict codes of honor that govern the lives of samurai, but Rurouni Kenshin is still considered to be a foundational anime in the genre. Kenshin is extremely powerful and skilled with a blade, but he practically resents himself for these abilities and tries to avoid death.

Kenshin struggles with where he fits in, but Hiko Seijuro has no qualms with killing others and he has a wealth of special skills and an intimidating physique that give him an advantage over Kenshin.

4 My Hero Academia’s Shigaraki Wields Multiple Quirks To Overwhelm Deku

Midoriya’s progress into a hero in My Hero Academia is remarkable considering that he begins as a Quirk-less fanboy and now he’s gained a grasp over his One For All Quirk and picked up other tricks, too. Tomura Shigaraki and his Decay Quirk are extremely dangerous at the start of the series and they only become a larger threat. Shigaraki obtains unbelievable power, more Quirks, and All For One possesses him in a way that makes him even more terrifying. Midoriya is able to resist him, but when it comes to pure strength it seems like Shigaraki would triumph.

3 Code Geass’ Suzaku Has Been Trained To Not Accept Defeat

Code Geass centers around intricate strategies to gain control and power. The anime's protagonist, Lelouch, begins his mission with an honorable aim, but his values are slowly warped and he turns into a tyrant. No one is smarter than Lelouch, but Suzaku is at least someone that can give him pause when it comes to combat. Suzaku is already highly trained and dangerous at the start of Code Geass, but he continues to refine his abilities so he's accomplished when it comes to the abilities of himself or his Geass.

2 T.K. & Angemon Are Strongest Champions In The Digital World

All of the Digi-Destined are the heroes in the Digimon Adventure anime, but Tai and Matt are frequently positioned as the leaders. They’re the ones whose Digimon evolve and combine together to take on the biggest threats in the series. Agumon and Gabumon’s evolved forms are extremely powerful, but T.K. and Patamon quickly surprise everyone with its Champion form, Angemon. The prophetic status of Angemon is underscored and it’s even able to take on Ultimate Digimon without difficulty. More powerful Digimon appear as the series continues, but Angemon and his evolutionary line continue to be powerful and important.

1 Bruno Bucciarati Is The Glue That Holds Giorno & The Gang Together

Every season of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure showcases a new member of the Joestar lineage and a powerful group of warriors that surround them. Each respective JoJo is typically the strongest of their group, but Golden Wind gets a little experimental and some consider Bruno Bucciarati to be the “unofficial JoJo” of the season. Giorno Giovanna is smart and strong, but his Stand takes time to become consistent. Bruno on the other hand has lived a rough life that’s made him a highly capable and resourceful gang leader. His Stand has also been able to outwit Giorno in the past.
