CD Projekt Red Announces The Witcher Board Game | CBR

Go on Board partnered with CD Projekt RED to create a board game inspired by The Witcher, delving into even more monsters and Witchers through its deck-building adventures.

Go On Board co-founder Łukasz Woźniak revealed in an announcement posted on YouTube that The Witcher: Old World is "a big box, action-adventure board game made for two to five people set in the dark fantasy world of The Witcher, years before the Saga of Geralt of Rivia."

According to Woźniak, the boardgame will expand the world history of Witcher-lore from CD Projekt Red's The Witcher video game series, exploring a time when even more monsters and Witchers roamed the continent. "You begin the game as a freshly trained Witcher from one of the five competing schools," Woźniak said. "You'll journey through a vast continent and explore different locations. You will learn your skill to improve your character, you'll brew portions, you'll fight plenty of monsters and even battle other witches in tower brawls."

Woźniak also shared that the gameplay for The Witcher: Old World is based around deck building, noting that your deck represents your health, how far you can travel and your combat abilities. "Through card synergy, you will be able to create powerful combos and also use your witcher school abilities to their full potential," he continued. "And that's what makes the combat in The Witcher: Old World so unique and exciting."

Go On Board and CD Projekt RED have already begun developing the game, with plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign for it in May. While delivery is expected by April 2022, no price point for The Witcher: Old World board game has been announced.

"We are going to release a standard version of the game and a deluxe version of the game, and the more people will contribute to our Kickstarter, the more content will be added in the box," Woźniak said. "We also want to involve the global Witcher community and shape the game contents and stories together." Fans are encouraged to stay involved in the progress of the game, as well as submit content ideas, via the Go On Board Facebook page. They can also sign up to be notified via email about the start of the Kickstarter campaign.

This isn't the first time that the world of The Witcher has inspired a board game. Fantasy Flight Games published The Witcher Adventure Game in 2014, but the title is currently out of print. An authentic digital version of that game, which was developed by CD Projekt RED in partnership with Can Explode, still survives on Steam.
