Disney+ is at nearly 100 million subscriptions since its November 2019 launch.
Disney+ hit 94.9 million subscribers during the final quarter of 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Its growth was boosted by Season 2 of The Mandalorian, the film Soul, which was slated for a theatrical release in June before it was placed on the streaming service on Christmas Day, and other programs, such as its miniseries adaptation of the book and film The Right Stuff.
Soul, Pixar's first film featuring an African American character as the lead, made the shortlist of films expected to be nominees for Academy Awards in 2021. And market studies show that The Mandalorian, a spinoff series set in the Star Wars universe, draws even more viewers than Marvel Studios' WandaVision.
Disney+'s penetration in India — 26 million subscribers — represents 30 percent of its total subscriber count. Disney+ is a bundled offering with Hotstar, a streaming service in India that Disney acquired with components of 21st Century Fox in 2019.
Disney+ said it had 86.8 million subscribers as of Dec. 2, so getting up to 94.9 million means it added 8.1 million subscribers by the end of the month. The Disney+ subscriber numbers outstrip the company's target of 90 million sign-ups by 2024.
