WARNING: The following contains spoilers for 30 Coins Episode 7, "The Glass Box," now airing on HBO.
Throughout its first season, HBO's 30 Coins has pit Paco's wife, Merche, against Elena, the town's vet. Merche has realized that while the mayor and Elena spent so much time together investigating the Judas coin and supernatural occurrences in Pedraza, they've fallen for each other.
All of this has culminated in Paco leaving her because he's depressed about Elena running away. However, while he thinks he's finally ending the mess, everything changes when Elena returns and the show finally has its big, brutal catfight.
Paco's a mere shell of himself, broken that Elena fled with Roque. Sadly, Roque died, which has left Elena shattered and a selfish Paco thinking she never wanted him in the first place. But it's all because she was still torn over her missing husband, Mario, and trying to respect Merche's marital bond. Nevertheless, Merche gets her shot at revenge when the demonic Father Angel comes to town and gives her a token to slip into Paco's jacket. They've worked out some sinister bargain, and as a fever hits Paco and he gets sick, his delusion seems to push him back to Merche.
Paco's desperate, thinking he's dying and relying on Merche because he is all he has left. Elena hasn't returned his calls from Paris, though, so it appears as if Paco wants forgiveness and a second chance. However, that changes when Elena comes back after Angel seals the people in, smoking Pedraza out and looking to burn everyone alive, which leads to Elena rushing in to find Paco. She's been duped by Angel's village witch, though, and as she's taken to the motel, she finds Paco dying, not realizing she's been set up.
Merche arrives moments later, and at long last, they throw down. Merche's the aggressor, taking Elena's head and slamming it into the staircase repeatedly. Unfortunately, in the conflict, the cursed card falls out of Paco's jacket, and when he comes to, he rushes in to save Elena. Sadly, Merche has taken the coin from Elena that she got from Roque and has the epiphany that Paco won't ever choose her.
As much as he tries to lie and make up with his wife, Merche knows it's all to get the coin, so she attacks him up and flees. She meets Angel in the town square and presents him the coin, not caring that she won't get her end of the deal. But at this point, Merche's so bitter, she doesn't care what happens to Pedraza as long as she gets her revenge.
