How Coming 2 America Builds on Black Panther's Legacy | CBR

Coming 2 America star Eddie Murphy said the film shares a legacy with Black Panther, as the two films showcase Black excellence and also appeal to audiences worldwide.

Murphy, who participated in a virtual panel hosted by The Illuminerdi, said of the upcoming sequel, "It's just about family, and love, and doing the right thing, and tradition. That's what the movie is about. And it's these amazing images of Black kings and queens, and princesses and all this stuff is going. It's like, it's the only movie that's … Black Panther did it. The second movie that had Black kings and Black … The very first one is Coming to America. And the third one is Coming 2 America."

1988's Coming to America grossed between $288.8 and $350 million worldwide. It stars Murphy as Akeem Joffer, crown prince of the fictional African nation Zamunda, who goes to Queens to escape a marriage arranged by the king and queen because he would prefer to choose a bride who loves him for himself, not his status.

Murphy added, "The original Coming to America, the very first one is the first movie in the history of movies that had an all Black cast that was successful all around the world. All around the world, the very first one ever. And there's just a handful of movies that have had all Black casts that have been successful all around the world."

Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began.

Directed by Craig Brewer, Coming 2 America stars Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, Wesley Snipes, James Earl Jones, John Amos, Teyana Taylor, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Paul Bates, Nomzamo Mbatha and Bella Murphy. The film arrives on Amazon Prime Video March 5.
