The Disney+ reboot of Doogie Howser, M.D., which starred Neil Patrick Harris as a teen wunderkind juggling adolescence and medical school, got enthusiastic support from Harris himself.
In an interview with Variety, Harris said "I'm so happy" about Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. The original aired for four seasons on ABC, from 1989 to 1993. The update changes the locale from Los Angeles to Hawaii and makes the lead a 16-year-old girl named Lahela "Doogie" Kameāloha. Doogie's father, played by Jason Scott Lee, is a native Hawaiian. Her mother, played by Kathleen Rose Perkins, is Irish. The new Doogie's mother is chief of staff at the hospital where she is undergoing her residency, making her Doogie's professional mentor as well.
Harris spoke highly of Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. creator and executive producer Kourtney Kang. He noted, "The creator of it was a big producer on How I Met Your Mother. I think setting it with a female protagonist is a great call … I think it's in really good hands."
Harris co-starred on How I Met Your Mother as Barney Stinson, and Kang served on the show in various producing roles throughout its nine-season run on CBS from 2005 to 2014. Harris also starred in the 2017-2019 Netflix show A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Peyton Elizabeth Lee, star of the Disney Channel series Andi Mack, is Doogie Kameāloha in the reboot. Harris said Doogie Kameāloha seems "like it's a passion project for many and I can’t wait to watch it."
Disney+'s Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. will be written by Kourtney Kang, who executive produces the project with Jake Kasdan, Melvin Mar and Dayna and Jesse Bochco. It stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Kathleen Rose Perkins and Jason Scott Lee. The series has yet to receive a premiere date.
