Peacock released the creepy first trailer for John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, its upcoming six-part docuseries about the infamous sex offender and serial killer also known as the "Killer Clown."
Posted on the official Peacock YouTube channel, the nearly two-minute trailer opens with footage of Gacy being interviewed while behind bars in 1992, and explaining, "I had no need to talk to the media. They were looking for sensationalism and they were looking for the monster."
The rest of the teaser combines snippets of archive footage from Gacy's trial, home videos and audio from news reports about Gacy's crimes, alongside interviews with people who knew Gacy before he was arrested. At one point, the voice of a female reporter explains, "Gacy was well-respected in his community and even dressed as a clown to entertain children." At another point in the trailer, the infamous killer observes, "The dead won't bother you. It's the living you got to worry about."
According to Peacock, the series features never-before-seen footage from a 1992 interview with Gacy, as well as interviews with people who "were forever changed by his unspeakable deeds and those who believe that the full truth about the case remains concealed to this day." Among those interviewed is Gacy’s second ex-wife.
Gacy assaulted and murdered at least 33 young men and boys in Illinois in the '70s before being arrested and sentenced to death. The bodies of 27 of those victims were found buried in the crawl space of Gacy's home. He died by lethal injection in 1994 at age 52.
Devil in Disguise marks Peacock’s first venture into unscripted and true crime programming, and follows the recent success of Netflix's Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer and HBO Max's Atlanta's Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children. Peacock previously announced that it will release a series of non-crime related docuseries starting with Michael Phelps: Medals, Memories & More, a three-part docuseries from NBC Sports that is set to premiere on the streaming platform ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise is produced by NBC News Studios with Witchcraft Motion Picture Company's Rod Blackhurst, who also served as a producer for 2016's Amanda Knox. Alexa Danner, Elizabeth Fischer and Tracy Ullman also serve as executive producers alongside Blackhurst, while Alison True is an executive consultant. All six episodes of Devil in Disguise debut on Peacock on Thursday, March 25.
