Punky Brewster: The Good Doctor Star to Play Cherie's Girlfriend on Peacock Series

With the premiere of the Punky Brewster revival just weeks away, it was announced that former The Good Doctor and Fringe star Jasika Nicole will appear in the revival as Cherie's girlfriend.

The announcement was made by GLAAD courtesy of an interview on Feb. 10. With the actor's addition, it was revealed Punky's best friend Cherie Johnson will have come out before the series premieres. Nicole will portray Cherie Johnson's lawyer girlfriend, Lauren. During the interview, she told GLAAD, "This is the first queer role I have played on network television. So, this is a really big deal for me! I do think there is something really specifically special and important about seeing Black love depicted on television."

As the interview continued, the actor, who is queer herself, spoke on the importance of representation on television. "I truly do not have words for how powerful it is to see Black queer love, queer love, trans people, and non-binary people," she said. "It is so essential to see people who are different than you are. It creates empathy, it creates compassion, and it expands your ability to love."

Nicole's addition to the cast came just days after the Punky Brewster trailer premiered featuring Johnson and Soleil Moon Frye reminiscing over home videos. Both stars will appear in the revival along with Freddie Prinze Jr. as Punky's ex-husband.
