The Simpsons Intro Gets a Stock Footage Remake | CBR

A comedian recently went viral on social media for recreating the infamous intro to The Simpsons shot-for-shot using only stock footage.

Comedian and filmmaker Matthew Highton -- known as @MattHighton on Twitter -- posted his surprisingly accurate side-by-side edit along with the caption, "It took a day, but here it is: The Simpsons intro recreated using ONLY stock footage."

As expected, not every shot from The Simpsons intro could be recreated exactly using only stock footage, so there are a handful of differences. One of the most noticeable changes is to the scene in which Homer is scene holding a glowing rod while wearing a hazmat suit at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. In the stock footage, a man also wears a hazmat suit but is seen opening a briefcase that contains something glowing. A second snippet from the intro, when Homer throws the glowing rod into the street from his vehicle, is replaced with footage of a sleepy driver yawning in his car.

The introduction for The Simpsons has been barely altered since the show premiered in 1989, and only saw significant changes in Seasons 2 and 10, as pointed out by The Independent. Specifically, the opening sequence was reanimated for the second series installment was trimmed down by approximately six seconds. In that version, Bart's skateboard ride through Springfield was shortened and the action cuts after Krusty the Clown appears on storefront televisions.

A new opening sequence was also animated for the show's transition to High Definition format and debuted ahead of Season 20, Episode 10, "Take My Life, Please." The current sequence is similar to the previous one but features a handful of changes that take advantage of the wider format.

In the hours after his stock footage edit went viral, Highton tweeted, "Okay, wow, you're taking to this fast. Thank you. There's a load of others in this thread as well as other stuff I've made. Obviously, follow for future ones and other stuff as well as my ego." Highton's other stock footage edits include recreations of the intros for shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons features voice work by the likes of Groening, Dan Castellaneta, Harry Shearer, Hank Azaria, Nancy Cartwright, Julie Kavner, and Yeardley Smith. New episodes from Season 32 of The Simpsons air on Sundays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
