WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Watch, Season 1, Episode 5, "The Dark in the Dark," now available on BBC.
In BBC's The Watch, all of Vimes' cops seem to have some important past or a big future ahead of them, with the exception of Constable Cheery. The captain himself is supposed to be an inspirational figure in the free world years later, while Angua's battle with her werewolf side has thrown fans for a loop. Now, in Carrot's case, clues have been dropped about his murky past after he was raised by dwarves.
In Cheery's case, she's a kind soul that allies like Spike take to because she goes about her forensics duty and putting together clues on Carcer's plans to raze Ankh-Morpork with a dragon. However, that quickly changes when Cheery decides to unlock another clue the mystical sword, Wayne, left behind.
Cheery takes Angua and Carrot back to the mines she grew up in to dive into the "Dark in the Dark," but it's not an easy journey because they have to use fake beards because the place only encourages masculinity, which is why they didn't take to Cheery wanting to transition to a woman. The problem is, as Cheery tells them, the Dark is an enemy, a shadow that kidnaps people and never lets them out, which is what happened to Cheery's mom.
Unfortunately, Cheery gets sucked into the Dark herself, and there she finds her mom, who tells her it's not an evil force. She has to embrace the darkness, which acts as a portal to the Multiverse and grants people unique powers. She stayed in it because she thinks it's her home, but she believes Cheery has a bigger role to play. And just as Carcer's about to kill her allies, Cherry uses it to take out his men and drop them all over the world using rifts. Luckily for Carcer, he's sucked back to meet his bosses, the evil Watch, just before she could swallow him up.
It's a big moment of triumph for Cheery, especially because so much angst tied down there. She's betrayed by her own people again, allowing him to get the Crown of Tak and almost capture Carrot, which is revealed to be of some mysterious royal bloodline. However, the sorcerer didn't count on Cheery actually finding herself and her purpose.
Still, Angua and Carrot are shocked as they see their friend become a literal powerhouse. While it pains her to leave her old flame behind, she gets back to the precinct and saves her friends because she knows she has a huge role to play in the war. And as the Assassins Guild tries to kill Vimes and Sybil, Cheery approaches, and in a quirky dance session, she uses the Dark once again to swallow up their enemies.
The Watch is executive produced by BBC Studios' Hilary Salmon (Luther) and Phil Collinson (Doctor Who). The series, which will run for eight episodes, is written by Simon Allen (Das Boot). It stars Richard Dormer, Anna Chancellor, Lara Rossi, Ingrid Oliver, James Fleet, Marama Corlett, Sam Adewunmi, Jo Eaton-Kent, Adam Hugill, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Ruth Madeley, Bianca Simone and Ingrid Oliver. The Watch airs Sundays at 8 pm ET/PT on BBC America.
