Tom and Jerry Beats Pandemic Standard with $13.7M U.S Opening

Tom and Jerry earned the second-best film opening of the pandemic following its release in theaters and on HBO Max on Feb. 26.

The WarnerMedia film brought in $13.7 million across 2,475 theaters during its opening weekend, landing just behind the $16.4 million brought in by Wonder Woman 1984's opening weekend, according to Deadline. Internationally, Tom and Jerry grossed $38.8 million. Tom and Jerry's opening weekend also beat the $9.7 million earned by Croods: New Age.

Tom and Jerry brought in $4 million on its opening day alone, thanks in part to a large number of private party theatrical auditorium rentals by families. This is especially noteworthy based on the fact that less than 50 percent of all 5,800 United States and Canadian theaters are open due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

"This is evidence that people are willing to go back to the movies when there is something they want to see," said Warner Bros. Domestic Distribution Boss Jeff Goldstein.

Where social media is concerned, Tom and Jerry earned nearly 42 million social media mentions across YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Much of its social traffic can be tied to the film's star Chloë Grace Moretz, who has roughly 20.3 million followers on Twitter and Instagram. She promoted the film's release over the weekend by posting a video on Instagram, in which she was shown interviewing Tom the cat.

The official synopsis for Tom and Jerry reads,

One of the most beloved rivalries in history is reignited when Jerry moves into New York City’s finest hotel on the eve of 'the wedding of the century,' forcing the event’s desperate planner to hire Tom to get rid of him. The ensuing cat and mouse battle threatens to destroy her career, the wedding and possibly the hotel itself.

But soon, an even bigger problem arises: a diabolically ambitious staffer conspiring against all three of them. An eye-popping blend of classic animation and live action, Tom and Jerry’s new big-screen adventure stakes new ground for the iconic characters and forces them to do the unthinkable… work together to save the day.

Directed by Tim Story and produced by Chris DeFaria, Tom and Jerry stars Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Colin Jost, Rob Delaney, Pallavi Sharda, Patsy Ferran, Bobby Cannavale, Lil Rel Howery and Ken Jeong. The film is in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
