WandaVision Features An Unexpected Magneto Easter Egg | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 5, "On a Very Special Episode...," now streaming on Disney+.

The latest episode of WandaVision offered a few answers and more than a few surprises, but some questions about the hit Disney+ series and its relationship to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are still hanging. Wanda's family ties are still a matter of debate, but one subtle moment in the episode may be referencing a classic mutant villain from Marvel Comics -- Magneto, the father of Wanda and Pietro Maximoff.

Twitter user Shruti Rao noticed that Wanda's display of her powers when confronting the S.W.O.R.D. team outside of Westview bore a close resemblance to a gesture that Magneto, played by Michael Fassbender, made in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The two scenes were captured in a gif for comparison and shared with the text, "like father, like daughter."

The gif replays the scene from the new WandaVision episode, "On a Very Special Episode...," in which Wanda turns away from the gathered agents and makes a careless flicking gesture over her shoulder. Immediately afterward, the weapons that the agents had pointed at her all turn instead against one of their own.

Likewise, in the scene from Dark Phoenix, Magneto takes on a ship full of hostile aliens using his magnetic powers, with his last movement in the fight being the same kind of gesture as he turns away.

This visual echo comes during the same episode that reintroduced Wanda's brother Pietro, who was introduced along with her in Avengers: Age of Ultron but killed in the same movie, albeit played by his actor from the X-Men film series. This unlikely crossover may be a simple wink at the audience, or it may be something more, a first move at bringing all Marvel's movie characters into one continuity. The same could apply to the tribute to Dark Phoenix's Magneto, which might be anything from a coincidental parallel to a hint that Magneto himself is on his way to the show.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
