WandaVision: Who Is Censoring Wanda’s Reality? | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 4, "We Interrupt This Program," now streaming on Disney+.

The first three episodes of WandaVision showed Wanda Maximoff's sitcom-inspired reality as she meant it to be seen. As she and Vision lived an idyllic life, we were just viewers keeping up with the episodes Wanda was creating, with only a few odd hints that there was a world outside the series. "We Interrupt This Program" finally goes outside of Westview, where the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division organization, aka S.W.O.R.D., is monitoring the situation.

However, as the organization watches the sitcom episodes unfold, one thing becomes clear: Wanda's reality is being censored. The question is, by who?

In the latest episode of WandaVision, S.W.O.R.D. becomes aware of Wanda's bubble reality in Westview, and sets up a surveillance center to try to figure out what is happening. It's only when Darcy Lewis is brought into the fold that the team starts to get some answers. The astrophysicist is able to tap into the waves emanating from the bubble reality and, after connecting them to an old television, she and Agent Jimmy Woo watch the first three episodes of WandaVision, just like we the audience have for the past three weeks.

However, there are two noticeable changes that occur. The first happens when Wanda is contacted by Woo through the radio, as seen in the series' second episode. When Wanda hears her name over the radio in "Don't Touch That Dial," the illusion of Westview is shaken and her neighbor Dottie smashes her glass, cutting herself in the process. Dottie bleeds from the hand, the crimson color breaking the episode's black and white aesthetic. However, none of that is actually seen by Darcy. Instead, the moment is censored.

And this happens again when the astrophysicist is watching Episode 3, "Now in Color." In the episode, Wanda comes to understand Geraldine is not who she thought she was, so Wanda blasts the intruder out of her television reality. But this scene is also censored from the telecast observed by S.W.O.R.D., meaning that the organization hasn't seen the full episodes because someone is interfering with them. But who?

For the time being, all we have are theories. Of course, it would be easy to point to Wanda as the one censoring these events in order to retain the illusion she has created. However, that may not be the case given she doesn't appear to be aware of what is happening outside the bubble she's created. It's therefore likely that the person who is censoring the episodes is Agnes. The mysterious "Nosy Neighbor" has been around ever since WandaVision's first episode, and it's clear she has an important role to play in Wanda's reality. She already voiced her suspicions that Geraldine wasn't from Westview, which might indicate she is aware of S.W.O.R.D. and the organization's attempts to contact Wanda. She could be censoring the scenes in the TV episodes so S.W.O.R.D. has no idea they are almost getting through to Wanda.

Then again, there could also be a mysterious third party who is manipulating the telecast. Rumors are swirling that the series may be hiding a big villain, and this could ultimately be their handiwork -- whoever they are.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
