WandaVision: Why the Series Didn't Bring Back Age of Ultron's Quicksilver

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 5, "On a Very Special Episode...," now streaming on Disney+.

The latest episode of WandaVision, "On a Very Special Episode...," ended with Wanda's brother Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver arriving at her house in Westview -- only he wasn't played by 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron's Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Instead, as Darcy Lewis noted, Pietro had been recast, with Evan Peters, who played Quicksilver in Fox's X-Men films, stepping in for Taylor-Johnson. As exciting as the Marvel Cinematic Universe tying a connection to the X-Men films is, many fans were surely left disappointed that Taylor-Johnson didn't return to the role. But there is a very specific reason Pietro had to be recast in WandaVision.

Introduced as the twin brother of Wanda, Quicksilver started out as an ally to Ultron before joining forces with Earth's Mightiest Heroes to stop the evil robot. Unfortunately, Pietro heroically sacrificed his life to save Clint Barton/Hawkeye, which meant Quicksilver only had the chance to appear in one MCU film. However, once the first details emerged about Scarlet Witch creating an alternate reality in which to resurrect Vision in WandaVision, fans started speculating Quicksilver would also return to the MCU, which did indeed happen in "On a Very Special Episode..."

In the episode, which centers around the themes of death and resurrection, Wanda and Vision's children -- Billy and Tommy -- find a dog, Sparky, who becomes the latest member of their family. However, after the canine tragically dies, Wanda has to deliver a hard lesson to her boys: Sometimes, the people we love the most leave, and there is nothing we can do about it -- not even her. Indeed, when pressed by her children to bring the dog back to life, Wanda explains that this is something she simply can't do.

Wanda's powers allow her to rewrite reality, using the matter already at her disposal to change it according to her will. But if someone is dead, she simply can't bring them back because even altering the matter into something else will not reanimate them. That is why she was able to bring back the android Vision, but not her human brother. Wanda can rearrange Vision to become a living machine again. But there is no bringing back her dead brother -- not the way he initially looked, anyway.

By bringing another version of Quicksilver to Westview, WandaVision has found a loophole that has allowed the series to reunite Wanda with her brother and establish a connection to the X-Men films, all in one fell swoop. But, unfortunately for fans of the original Pietro, it seems like he won't be coming back, at least not played by Taylor-Johnson.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
