With the Inuyasha spinoff series, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon currently airing, old and new fans may want to consider reading the manga or watching the anime for Rumiko Takahashi’s classic fantasy story, Inuyasha. One major reason why you should check out Inuyasha is that Yashahime incorporates key characters, like Sesshomaru and Miroku, from the original franchise, making audiences curious about these characters if they don’t know their backstories, or need a refresher. To (re)introduce fans to the world of Inuyasha, here is where you can read the manga and watch the original series.
If you want to read the Inuyasha manga series, written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi, there are a few outlets you can look to. It’s difficult to buy Viz Media’s first-printed, English-translated edition of Inuyasha because it is out of print, so you'll have to buy those editions second-hand on eBay, Amazon, or a secondhand bookstore, which vary in price.
Luckily, Viz Media has reprinted the Inuyasha series into 18 big volumes, known as the VIZBIG Editions. Each edition combines three volumes of the original manga into one, consisting of over 500 pages of action and adventure. You can purchase these volumes on the Viz Media website as a printed paperback for $19.99 or a digital copy for $13.99. However, you can get the VIZBIG Edition paperbacks for a cheaper price on Right Stuf ($14.99) and Amazon ($17.99). Right Stuf also sells the Ani-Manga edition of the Inuyasha series in full color and paperback form for $8.99 each. You can also get a digital copy of the VIZBIG editions for $13.99 on ComiXology and other digital stores like GooglePlay and Kindle with varying prices.
You can stream the Inuyasha series in English, subbed or dubbed, on HBO Max, Netflix, Crunchyroll, Funimation or Hulu. However, each streaming service has its pros and cons. HBO Max, Netflix, Crunchyroll and Funimation only offer the first 54 episodes of the original series. Hulu, though, has all seven seasons of Inuyasha as well as Inuyasha: The Final Act, the epic final season that concludes the entire series. For the best subscription package deal to watch Inuyasha, Hulu is the best choice, which has a subscription plan starting at $5.99 a month.
However, Hulu does not offer the four Inuyasha movies: Affections Touching Across Time (2001), The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass (2002), Swords of an Honorable Ruler (2003), Fire on the Mystic Island (2004). If you want to watch the movies, they are available on Netflix, Funimation, Crunchyroll and YouTube. The movies don't correlate to the main storyline and so watching them is optional, but if you are a super fan, you can watch the movies on Crunchyroll or YouTube for free with ads.
If you want to digitally own the series, you can buy digital copies of each episode and movie on Prime Video, YouTube, iTunes and GooglePlay with a starting price of $1.99. Or, if you want the entire collection digitally, each season's prices vary on Prime Video ($19.99 to $44.99) and YouTube ($11.99 to $44.99). As for the digital copy of The Final Act, it is divided into two parts with prices ranging from $19.99 for SD and $28.99 for HD on Prime Video and YouTube. iTunes and GooglePlay also has similar prices for the digital collection. As for the movies, you can purchase them digitally on Prime Video ($9.99), iTunes ($12.99) and GooglePlay ($7.99).
If you're a hardcore collector, you may want to get the old-school DVDs of the series. Viz Media offers DVD box sets for each season for a hefty price of $99.49 each. However, you can get your collection at a cheaper rate if you order on Right Stuff ($22.48 per season) or Amazon, where you can get the entire series (Seasons 1-7) in DVD format for $88.65. You can also get the complete DVD box set of the Inuyasha series on eBay, with prices ranging from $38.09 to $57.89.
Alternatively, you may want to buy the entire Blu-ray collection. Viz Media is currently reissuing the entire series in this format. You can get the first three seasons right now on Viz Media’s website for $39.99, but other stores’ prices may vary. Some sites that are worth looking into are Right Stuf, which offers the Inuyasha Blu-ray sets for $35.99 and Amazon for around $24.34. As of right now, there are only Blu-rays for Seasons 1 to 3, while Seasons 4 and 5 are set to be released later this year. You can currently pre-order them right now on Viz Media, Right Stuf and Amazon. There is also a complete Blu-ray collection of all the Inuyasha movies on Amazon ($16.32 ) and Right Stuf ($22.48). You can also buy The Final Act on Blu-ray standard edition on Amazon ($31.00) or Right Stuf ($49.47). Viz Media has the movie collection and The Final Act in various formats too, but prices will vary.
