Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #1 has a back-up story that finds Nubia replacing Diana of Themyscira as the lone Amazon roaming Earth. Her people pulled out of the world of man, but the new Wonder Woman felt like there was still hope, opting to stay and hone her powers under the mystical Aunt Nancy.
However, as she encounters Grail, Darkseid's deadly daughter, Nubia's battle with this killer could doom all of DC's gods, thanks to one deadly relic that's been discovered.
Grail's found trying to steal a piece of an artifact in an Atlanta museum but is foiled by Nubia. Grail's shocked as she didn't know Themyscira has an emissary left but clearly, Nubia's gone rogue and wants to defend humanity despite their crimes against her people. In the fight, though, Grail gets the upper hand, but the relic saves Nubia with its energy, hinting she's meant for more. Grail has no choice but to flee with it, leaving Nubia to seek out Nancy for powers. And in their meeting, the witch admits that she, herself, has a part to play in this per the visions Nubia got when she was out cold. She confirms Nubia saw the history of the item, Kali's Wrath, which is a master key other supernatural beings created eons ago. This was to stop gods from fighting each other and trying to claim dominion of the planet, and when the key was perfected, it drained the rage and anger from the gods, bringing peace about temporarily.
But a massive side effect was that it could tear rifts open and allow other dark entities in from mysterious realms. In other words, it found other ways of poisoning the planet, which is why Nancy's crew split it into many pieces and scattered it across the world. Now, Grail has one more piece to find, which leaves Nubia wondering what her enemy plans to do with the item and what's her true role in all this. The fact Nancy seems to be hiding more skeletons in the closet says a lot as well, which Nubia does notice.
However, before they could come up with a strategy, a portal opens and swallows Nubia up, leaving Nancy wondering where she was taken to. It seems like she's gone into one of the rifts Nancy mentioned, leaving us wondering if she'll meet a friend or a foe.
If Grail's able to assemble all of the pieces, she may well have the ultimate godkiller on hand. She could use it to hunt down any and all gods, whether it's the New Gods, Greek gods, or others in the DCU, and might be able to even power herself up. Ultimately, Nancy knows she messed up and needs Nubia back fast, because she can tell there's going to be death and destruction on the horizon soon enough.
