Pokémon took over the 1990s shortly after the series debut, but the success around the latest entries into the series is proof that the series isn’t going away anytime soon. Fans of the series have gotten to witness the world of Pokémon expand and become more intricate.
The latest entries on the Nintendo Switch—Pokémon Sword and Shield—have been the biggest examples of this. They’ve helped establish a precedent for the new Generation 8 line of releases. The generation suffers from how there are already hundreds of Pokémon designs out there, but Sword and Shield feature some great ideas for Pokémon that have resulted in some of the franchise’s cutest creatures.
10 Skwovet’s Appetite Is Just As Big As Its Heart
Some of the earlier Pokémon titles are bogged down over how the wild Pokémon that trainers encounter are repetitive and aren't representative of the full Pokédex. Wild Pokémon are still prevalent, but Galar's introductory areas are filled with some adorable creatures that run rampant.
Skwovet is the strong combination of a sweet animal—in this case, a squirrel—and an endearing character trait, which happens to be its massive appetite. Skwovet is cute in Pokémon Sword and Shield, but the latest anime series truly highlight its adorable ways.
9 Cufant Is A Darling Elephant Pokémon That’s Hard To Forget
Each Generation of Pokémon has a different flavor when it comes to the new Pokédex entries, usually through their designs' tone or inspiration. Some animals have received many Pokémon equivalencies, but there are other beasts from nature, like elephants, with a much smaller presence.
Generation 8 has the benefit of hindsight and can fill in any Pokédex gaps. Cufant quickly becomes the cutest of the Elephant Pokémon, gives Donphan a run for its money, and also puts most other Steel-Type Pokémon to shame. It's not just Cufant's design, but it's filled with positive energy to help others.
8 Scorbunny’s Playful Mischief Is Infectious
All of the starter Pokémon that get introduced in Generation 8’s Galar region is very adorable, but Scorbunny is the Fire-Type selection that immediately got a lot of attention. Scorbunny looks youthful, but it’s got a streak of mischief that makes it a bit of a wild card.
However, Scorbunny is the type to let his trainer in on the joke and share the hilarity. Scorbunny becomes a Pokémon that’s hard to chastise due to how its antics come from a place of love, yet its desire for structure makes it a very satisfying partner.
7 Hattrem Is Like A Baby Sorcerer That Wants To Play Make-Believe
The later entries in the Pokémon franchise have gone to more unconventional places. There are now Pokémon that come from outer space, as well as others that can bend the limits of space and time or a variety that seem to be capable of magic.
Some Generation 8 Pokémon lean into fables and folklore, and Hattrem is an adorable riff on a witch that’s too cute to be cursed. Admittedly, Hattrem is powerful and evolves into a Pokémon that can be quite dangerous, but its base form looks more like a Pokémon that’s just playing games and dressing up.
6 Morpeko Has Two Equally Adorable Sides
It's become a running trend through each new generation of Pokémon titles to feature a handful of Pikachu clones that try to conjure the magic of the original Generation 1 Electric-Type Pokémon.
These Pikachu knock-offs often feel like lazy imitators, but Morpeko is a step in the right direction and is arguably just as cute as the original. Morpeko has a stylish pattern, and the Pokémon can shift between two forms, with its angry version somehow being even cuter rather than a frightening transition.
5 Alcremie Is Like A Living Dessert That Wants To Please
Pokémon designs have truly covered all of the bases at this point, and the series' longevity has resulted in some more unusual Pokémon in Generation 8's Sword and Shield, like Alcremie. Alcremie is kind of like if somebody looked at Unown and then decided to make it a dessert instead.
Alcremie is figuratively and literally sweet with its sugary design. Still, it's also able to evolve into nine different forms, which have many variants of their own, resulting in over 60 different varieties of Alcremie. The Pokémon's style of cuteness can be customized to the trainer's preference.
4 Grookey Is One Of The More Endearing Starter Pokémon To Come Along
The Pokémon series understands that the starter Pokémon that trainers acquire at the beginning of each game need to contain some of the most inspired and appealing designs of the series. Players need to be excited when they begin their adventure, and the starter Pokémon makes that possible.
Grookey, the Grass-Type representative, is also a Monkey Pokémon, which is also very popular in the Pokémon community. Grookey grows more aggressive as it evolves, but it’s at its cutest in its base form with its tiny rhythm tools.
3 Sobble’s Worried Nature Makes It Even More Precious
Pokémon has developed many unique ways to get its audience to sympathize with their Pokémon. A cheerful creature can be adorable, but there’s also an instinct to protect that’s dormant in many people, and Sobble is a Pokémon that helps feed that compulsion.
Sobble is an amphibian Water-Type starter Pokémon that is frequently lost in doubt. The Pokémon has a big heart, making it feel extraordinary when it opens up to its trainer. It’s easy to form a protective bond with Sobble and fall in love with the Pokémon.
2 Wooloo’s Exaggerated Nature Turns It Into A Sweet Sight
Pokémon introduced its first Sheep Pokémon in Generation 2 with Mareep. Still, it’s been a very long time since they’ve tried to do something else with a Pokémon interpretation of the farm animal.
Wooloo has a simple look that plays up its bulky wool, and the Pokémon seems overwhelmed by how its own body might swallow itself. There’s some self-deprecation with Wooloo’s look, but it makes the Electric-Type Pokémon stand out. Shiny Pokémon are usually a fun change of pace, but in Wooloo’s case, there’s an equally fetching design that flips the Sheep Pokémon’s standard color pattern.
1 Yamper Is A Pokémon That’s The Very Best Boy
There are times when the most popular Pokémon from a new generation are a complete surprise, but then there are other additions like Yamper that are clearly going to be big hits from the minute they’re revealed. Dog Pokémon are always some of the most popular designs, and Yamper pulls from a corgi. The result is a lovable Electric-Type Pokémon that‘s even more popular with younger trainers. In the end, it wouldn’t matter what type of Pokémon Yamper is because its friendly attitude is enough to win people over.
