Baron Zemo Looms in Fiery Falcon and The Winter Soldier Photo

Baron Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) rises like a phoenix in a new fiery photo for Marvel Studios/Disney's upcoming series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The former Sokovian special forces officer turned villain stands behind flames in a new photo from the Marvel series, as shared by Empire Online. In the photo, he's wearing a purple mask, similar to his appearance in Marvel Comics, glaring as he's covered by the red light of flames.

Helmut Zemo made his first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in Captain America: Civil War. His family died during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Zemo sought to destroy the Avengers from the inside. He kills Winter Soldier's former Hydra handler and steals a book that contains the trigger words to activate Bucky Barnes' (Sebastian Stan) brainwashing. Zemo then frames Winter Soldier as the one who bombed the Vienna International Centre -- an attack that killed many people, including T'Chaka (John Kani), the king of Wakanda and father of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman).

Zemo's master plan leads to a manhunt to find the Winter Soldier who's been left in a triggered attack mode, while the MCU heroes choose sides either for or against the governmental oversight imposed by the Sokovian Accords. After a battle with Winter Soldier, Captain America (Chris Evans) learns that Zemo's the one responsible and they follow him to the Hydra Siberian facility. Zemo is ultimately caught by T'Challa/Black Panther who chooses to spare his life and bring him to the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre instead.

In Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Zemo is back to cause more destruction. Series director Kari Skogland stated that Zemo will be in "a very dark place" in this post-Blip world and has even more complexities than before. Bucky and Zemo still have unfinished business which will be addressed in the upcoming Marvel series.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series premieres March 19 on Disney+.
