Falcon and Winter Solider Writer Promises More 'Relevant' Social Commentary

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Episode 1, "New World Order," now streaming on Disney+.

Malcolm Spellman, head writer for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, teased that the new Marvel Studios/Disney+ series is packed with social commentary.

"This is going to be an extremely relevant show in a lot of ways, and that is not by accident," Spellman told Variety following the show's debut. "The magic of embracing diversity in the writers' room and having an almost all-Black staff allows you to tap into pop culture."

Spellman, who also serves as an executive producer on the Marvel show, continued, "Black folk are the masters of pop culture. And when we get a shot, to do what we do, it is universal for everyone because our struggle and our point of view is a concentrated version of the greater human struggle."

The series writer specifically addressed a big "pointed" moment at the end of Episode 1 -- when it was revealed that the government lied to Sam Wilson and used Rogers' shield to create a new, white Captain America. "Those moments you're talking about are pointed," Spellman confirmed. "And we dig deeper and deeper and deeper as the series progresses.

Spellman also dished on another scene in the premiere episode that included some social commentary on Sam Wilson, involving the former Avenger being denied for a bank loan. "That was a really, really fun moment, where what was supposed to be a scene that mostly dealt with the issues of, you know, a Black family from a certain background dealing with a bank loan," he said. The show writer added the moment spurred a larger conversation about unfair pay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It was previously revealed that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier takes place six months after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The series will find Sam Wilson/Falcon and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier teaming up to defend Steve Rogers' legacy while taking on a variety of bad guys, including Helmut Zemo. US Agent's presence was also announced at the end of Season 1, Episode 1, suggesting that Bucky and Sam will have a third contender for Cap's shield to consult or foreseeably battle in the series' future.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. New episodes debut on Fridays on Disney+.
