The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will feature a Marvel comics location that became available to use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to the Disney/Fox merger.
"There's a setting in particular that people have already glimpsed in some of the trailers that is a setting from the Marvel Comics that was not previously available to us, but it's more of an Easter egg in and of itself," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told EW during an interview. Feige's vague language showed he didn't want to set expectations too high. However, set photos may have already revealed the location.
When The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was filming in Atlanta prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Murphy's Multiverse noticed that a set photo featured the flag of Madripoor. In Marvel Comics canon, Madripoor is a hotbed of criminal activity that is usually frequented by the X-Man Wolverine.
The Disney/Fox merger has given Marvel Studios free rein over the entire library of Marvel characters. At Disney Investor Day 2020, Feige announced that a Fantastic Four movie was in the works from Jon Watts, who has helmed Tom Holland's Spider-Man films. A film titled The Mutants is also rumored to be in development, which would serve as an official reboot for the X-Men in the MCU.
Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series premieres March 19 on Disney+.
