Disney executive chairman and former CEO Bob Iger has joined others in the entertainment industry condemning the recent wave of hate crimes committed against the AAPI community, and has put out the call for unity to stop the violence.
"The despicable acts of hate, discrimination and violence directed at the AAPI community tear at the very fabric of our society," Iger tweeted Friday. "We must strongly support efforts that promote greater unity and tolerance."
There has been an increase in violence against Asian Americans across the country within the past year. On March 16, a man went on a shooting spree in the Atlanta, GA area, killing eight people, six of whom were women of Asian descent.
In January, a video showing an elderly Asian man being pushed to the ground in Oakland, CA went viral, spurring a wave of condemnations across the entertainment industry. WarnerMedia, DC Comics and comics artist Frank Miller have been among those speaking out against the violence.
The wave of attacks over the past year has come in conjunction with the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which originated in China's Wuhan province. Many individuals, including high-profile politicians, have improperly dubbed the COVID-19 virus as the "China virus" or "Chinese virus," and the perpetuation of this label is believed to have played a part in the recent uptick in violence.
