Fortnite Developer Epic Games Acquires Fall Guys Maker Tonic Games Group

Epic Games has purchased Tonic Games Group, placing Fortnite and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout under the same roof.

"It's no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal," Tim Sweeney, Epic Games founder and CEO said. "As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences."

The purchase does not mean much in the short term for Fall Guys gamers. The game is still available for Steam and PlayStation and will arrive soon for Xbox and Nintendo Switch. However, in the long run, Fall Guys could see some of the features found in Epic Games' Fortnite and Rocket League incorporated into its own gameplay, including account systems, cross-play, squad vs. squad modes and more.

"At Tonic Games Group we often say that 'everyone deserves a game that feels like it was made for them.' With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us," Tonic Games Group Co-Founder and CEO Dave Bailey said. "They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn't be more excited to be joining forces with their team."

"Beyond the shared vision among our teams, we see tremendous potential in combining forces with Epic. Whether it's about making our own games the best they can be or empowering other game developers to take their content from a kernel of an idea to commercial success, we know that together we will be able to reach greater heights, said Paul Croft, Tonic Games Group co-founder and chief games officer.

Fall Guys debuted on Aug. 4 of last year and quickly took over the multiplayer and battle royale gaming spheres, selling over 11 million copies on PC by December 2020. Playing as a jellybean-shaped figure, players compete in a series of individual and team challenges, including races and capture the flag-like competitions. Players are eliminated in every match, and the last gamer standing is declared the winner.

Developed by Mediatonic, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is now available for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4. It arrives on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One in mid-2021.
