Game of Thrones' George RR Martin Strikes Major Deal With HBO

Author and screenwriter George R.R. Martin, whose bestselling epic fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire was adapted into the smash hit Game of Thrones, has signed an overall deal to develop more projects through HBO.

The agreement spans the next five years and is valued in the mid-eight figures, as reported by THR. This comes as multiple series that spin off of Game of Thrones are in development, as well as other projects involving Martin.

A Song of Ice and Fire is an unfinished series that consists of five books, the first of which was published in 1996. The series tells the story of a war of succession in a world of unstable weather patterns and dormant magic, and is praised for its realism and complex characters. In 2007, Martin signed a deal with HBO to adapt A Song of Ice and Fire as the high-budget Game of Thrones, which was a huge success and subsequently ran for eight seasons, departing from Martin's plot when the show had outrun the books.

The universe based in Martin's works is already expanding at HBO, with House of the Dragon first on the list. The series takes place 300 years before Game of Thrones, telling the story of the civil war within the Targaryen family who ruled the nation of Westeros. An animated Game of Thrones spinoff and an adaptation of the prequel series Tales of Dunk and Egg are also in the works, with Martin producing. Other potential series have been reported, drawing on various aspects of the lore that Martin established for his world.

In addition to projects based on his own writing, Martin will also help to bring Roger Zelazny's sci-fi/fantasy series Roadmarks to HBO alongside Fear the Walking Dead co-executive producer Kalinda Vazquez. Outside of HBO, Martin has a film based on his novelette Sandkings in development at Netflix, and a Peacock series based on Wild Cards, a superhero anthology series for which he is the editor.

Created by George R.R. Martin, Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke and Emma D'Arcy. The series is expected to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2022.
