Newly released merchandise for the latest installment in the Monsterverse franchise, Godzilla vs Kong, has spoiled the appearance of a major character.
The merchandise label responsible for the spoiler, Heredia Clothing, has accidentally revealed the first official images of Mechagodzilla, who fans can now be certain will make an appearance in the upcoming film. While the original post has since been deleted by the label, Twitter user EINomqui reposted a photo of the long-sleeved shirt with the Mechagodzilla image. The shirt's logo labels the robot titan the "Ultimate Destroyer."
This is not the first human-made titan included in the upcoming film. Those audience members who have been paying careful attention to the earlier movies will remember King Ghidorah, the primary antagonist of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. After its final battle with Godzilla, it was revealed that the internal structure of the beast contained several wires and mechanized elements. It was reported by several press outlets on an official visit to the Godzilla vs. Kong set that one of Ghidora's severed heads will be integral to the plot of the upcoming film. The sinister Apex organization uses the remains of King Ghidorah to create a cybernetic Titan hybrid, that fans have speculated will end up being Mechagodzilla.
Godzilla vs. Kong will be the fourth and final instalment in the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' collaborative Monsterverse which has included 2014's Godzilla, 2017's Kong: Skull Island and 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The synopsis of the climactic film reads,
Legends collide in "Godzilla vs. Kong" as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans -- instigated by unseen forces -- is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.
Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31.
