WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Good Girls Season 4, Episode 2, "Big Kahuna."
While Beth (Christina Hendricks) and Annie (Mae Whitman) tend to their criminal empire's problems in NBC's Good Girls, Ruby (Retta) is more focused on her family issues in Season 4. She's trying to mend her marriage to Stan (Reno Wilson) after he began dabbling in theft because they needed funds for their sick daughter, Sara, who suspected something was off with her parents. However, just as it seems they're making headway, the couple hits yet another stumbling block when they discover they made an expensive mistake linked to Sara's kidney disease.
Last season, Sara, after receiving a transplant, invited Carl and Jenny over after they hit hard times. Their daughter died in an accident and her organs were donated to Sara, so she decided to try to do some good and get karma points back for her family that was in a rut. Sadly, the young girl didn't realize the financial burden it would bring her parents, who were guilted into taking care of the couple for a bit.
Carl lost his job and house, and as a result, Stan and Ruby couldn't let them leave. It culminated in them buying the couple a car to help get them back on their feet, and as they left, it felt like a weight was gone. But now, the latest episode finds them returning, broker than ever because they couldn't get work, which annoys Ruby. Stan knows it's hard to fork out more cash, but it's something they have to do in Sara's honor. It's still taking a severe toll, though, so much so at dinner, Ruby and Stan attack Carl and Jenny for being freeloaders when they think Carl's about to ask for money.
However, they're wrong, and he's actually handing over his last $87 in an envelope as part of a payment plan, leaving the husband and wife totally embarrassed. They awkwardly try to move past it, but the next day, Stan reveals he did some digging because some of Carl and Jenny's words didn't sync up to Sara's timeline. And, as it turns out, they're not the real donors.
There was a mix-up, most likely on Sara's part when she found them, as their child died in a crash after Sara's transplant. Still, they don't have the heart to kick a couple out when they're down because they've been there themselves. But there's another cost that might factor in because Phoebe was tracking Ruby's online spending to them last season. Now, if the FBI agent knows they're back in town, she could start investigating again, using Carl and Jenny to mine intel to bring Ruby and Stan down for good. She already got Dean arrested, so this could finally help unravel the laundering and counterfeiting scheme.
Good Girls stars Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, Retta, Matthew Lillard, Reno Wilson and Manny Montana. Season 4 airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
