HBO's 30 Coins ends on a shocking note when the show's main protagonist, Father Vergara, seemingly sacrifices his life to stop Cardinal Santoro and the Cainite cult in Pedraza. Still, there are many players involved still out there aiming to stop the apocalypse, or in the case of Angel, resume the quest to commence the end of days.
However, what makes the end of Season 1 even more intriguing is the full story behind many characters and their motivations haven't been revealed fully. So, with that in mind, let's look at the biggest mysteries the next season of 30 Coins will have to explore.
Vergara reveals he has powers like something from Beastmaster when he projects himself into a white dove to spy on the Spanish town as the cult preps their ritual. He uses this to scupper their plans, but it's the first time he's shown doing anything like this. In fact, he was shocked when Santoro showed him Jesus' gospels, which allowed people to harness abilities.
Vergara didn't read the scriptures, nor did he have access to any magical tomes, so it's unclear how he gained those abilities. Season 2 needs to explore how, when and where he was able to generate powers because it hints he might secretly have been training in his younger years in the Vatican. Obviously, he has many secrets as a rogue priest, which is why Angel and Santoro wanted him on their side, but this still needs to be addressed.
In the finale, Angel boxes the town using an invisible barrier he calls the Glass Box. As Paco and Elena race out in the finale, it seems like they'll crash into it like Laguna in the penultimate episode, but they make it through. As it turns out, this happens because Vergara tackles Santoro off a balcony and the crown with all the coins scatter, shattering the barrier.
But the issue is, the coins didn't generate the barrier. Angel worked a spell on his own before Santoro's people came in, meaning even if the crown was broken, the barrier should still be up. It may be Vergara used his magic or Angel's powers weakened, but that needs to be explained in detail as it's awfully convenient how the heroes were allowed to escape.
After the cult starts fighting for the coins, Angel leaves Santoro dead and doesn't bother to resurrect him. He then shapeshifts into an Asian man and heads to New York, hinting he's going for backup. However, the show doesn't reveal who this new form is, why Angel didn't try to recover the coins and what's in the Big Apple. It could be relics or other high-level demonic soldiers, but he would've gone back to the Vatican for that.
This season showed Santoro and Vergara in the Vatican training, only for Angel to offer a door to Satan. Santoro entered and got incinerated, but it's unclear what's happened to him after that. He came back as a man with powers, which could be from Jesus' gospels, but it could be that one of Satan's foot-soldiers possessed him. Seeing as Santoro survived stabbings, shootings and other assaults, but died in a fall, fans would like answers because, at one point, the show props him up as Hell's ultimate general.
Season 1 sees Antonio play both sides, working with the Cainites to infiltrate Pedraza and selling out Vergara's team. Then, he's found helping Vergara's people out and trying to stop Angel from taking over. While it seems like some mysterious entity is actually the one using him as a puppet, the mystery needs to be explained.
It's possible it's God using this wildcard as an instrument to get the coins for himself, and the fact he saved Laguna and is now helping the police chief repair the town suggests he will have a heroic role. Still, he's constantly flipping sides and performing shocking deeds, so it would be nice to what the trickster's real endgame is.
Starring Eduard Fernández, Megan Montaner, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Macarena Gómez, Pepón Nieto and Manolo Solo, 30 Coins is streaming on HBO Max.
