How Many 2021 Predictions Did Keanu Reeves' Johnny Mnemonic Nail?

Though Keanu Reeves is best known for roles in major franchises like John Wick and The Matrix, he also starred in the 1995 cyberpunk film Johnny Mnemonic -- which happens to be set in the year 2021. Amazon Prime Video recently released a video listing the technology used in the film that came to pass in the real world.

Among the most accurate predictions were X-ray machines in airports and masked protests, as well as virtual church services. Inaccurate predictions include laser whips and computers that let you interface with a dolphin's mind, which Reeves' title character does toward the end of the film.

Johnny Mnemonic stars Reeves as Johnny, a "mnemonic courier" who trades data for megacorporations. Johnny's latest job puts him in the crosshairs of the Yakuza, and he goes on a quest to decrypt the data before it permanently damages his mind. Johnny Mnemonic is based on a short story by William Gibson, who also wrote the screenplay for the film version. Gibson is well known as the architect of the cyberpunk genre, which first appeared in his debut novel Neuromancer.

Reeves has recently added "comic book writer" to his resume with BRZRKR. The BOOM! Studios series, co-created by Reeves with Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT) and Ron Garney (Captain America) features an immortal assassin based on Reeves' likeness who partakes in black-ops missions for the U.S. Government.

Johnny Mnemonic is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
