John McTiernan's Last Action Hero is getting a 4K UHD Blu-ray release thanks to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, who asked more than 30,000 fans in a 2019 poll which of its older titles they wanted to see on 4K.
Initially released in 1993, Last Action Hero stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as fictional hero Jack Slater, an indestructible Los Angeles cop who comes to life thanks to a young boy's magic ticket. While the writing of the film's script was plagued by problems, and the theatrical version of the film was panned by critics, it went on to become a cult classic.
The official synopsis for the film reads,
Young Danny Madigan (Austin O'Brien) is a lonely 11-year-old boy who escapes from his bleak reality by watching the action adventure movies of his favorite film character, Jack Slater (Schwarzenegger). When his best friend, Nick the projectionist, gives him a special ticket to the new Slater film, Danny is magically transported into Jack's world, where the good guys always win. Danny becomes his helper as Jack battles a trio of nefarious bad guys, Benedict (Charles Dance), Vivaldi (Anthony Quinn) and The Ripper (Tom Noonan). But things get out of hand when Benedict steals Danny's magic ticket stub and transports himself into the real world, where crime can, and often does, pay. Jack and Danny must leave fictional Los Angeles for real-life New York and battle the villains without the aid of movie magic or stuntmen.
According to an official press release, the Blu-ray edition of Last Action Hero will feature brand new audio commentary from McTiernan, an original behind-the-scenes featurette, the original theatrical teaser for the film, deleted and alternate scenes and an alternate ending. It will also include the music video for AC/DC's "Big Gun," which appeared in the film, and will be presented in a limited edition collectible steelbook case.
Other special features include the film being remastered in 4K resolution from the original camera negative, with HDR10, and all-new Dolby Atmos audio + the original theatrical SDDS mix presented as 5.1 + original theatrical stereo audio. The release marks the second time the film has been presented on Blu-ray. The film was first released on Blue-ray in 2019 as part of Mill Creek Entertainment's retro VHS line, which repackages its movies to look like formal rental tapes.
