Legacies: Landon & Malivore Are More Alike Than Expected - & It Helps Landon Free Himself

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Legacies Season 3, Episode 6, "To Whom It May Concern," which aired Thursday on The CW.

Legacies is back after a brief hiatus, and while the previous episode showed Hope's valiant efforts to bring Landon back after he dissolved into black goo, the latest episode, "To Whom It May Concern," shows what Landon does after she's successful. The challenge is that Hope is convinced Landon is gone for good. Even though she did everything she could to ensure his return, she has no idea her last effort -- wishing on an artifact that grants one's heart's desire -- worked. That's because although the artifact revived Landon, the location of his revival is Malivore's pit. Surprisingly, however, while he's there Landon demonstrates more than once that he thinks more like Malivore than might be expected -- and it ultimately helps him free himself.

Historically, when Landon's gotten into some kind of supernatural trouble, he's waited for Hope to save him. And at first this seems to be his strategy when he finds himself in Malivore's pit. After being brought back, he walks towards a glowing door in the darkness that leads into a surprisingly normal-looking ice cream shop. However, it's clear things aren't as innocent as they seem when he notices who's behind the counter: the Necromancer. Working at an ice cream shop is the punishment Malivore devised for the Necromancer after the Necromancer raised and attempted to control Malivore.

The Necromancer proposes he and Landon team up to get out of the pit together and Landon accepts. Their first order of business involves breaking the chains that keep the Necromancer tied to the ice cream shop, which are enchanted to keep the Necromancer bound until he does something he'd never do. Yet, while the Necromancer can't think of anything he hasn't done, it's Landon who realizes the simple solution his father devised. The Necromancer would do plenty of extreme and noteworthy things, but what he won't do is sing for his customers. Landon's hunch proves correct when the Necromancer unhappily sings and his chains fall right off.

Of course, the Necromancer isn't exactly a man of his word, so his next move is to knock Landon out and chain them together based on his belief that Hope will come to save Landon and will end up having to save them both. The Necromancer is going with this strategy even though Malivore gave him a key that opens a passage out of the pit because the Necromancer has no idea where that passage is -- and he's not willing to look.

Once again, though, Landon proves he's on the same wavelength as his father. While the Necromancer thinks the "get-out-of-the-pit-free" key is just another way for Malivore to torture him, Landon quickly realizes the key opens the store's freezer. However, this passage out of Malivore's pit is only made for one, which leads to am epic struggle between Landon and the Necromancer, in which the Necromancer frees himself from the enchanted chains once more, leaving Landon bound as the Necromancer comments that Landon doesn't have it in him to win no matter what. Yet, Landon musters a newfound determination to save himself, using the chains to pull  the Necromancer back from the freezer and then beating him to a bloody pulp. It turns out this is the one thing Landon wouldn't do, so the magical chains fall off him and he jumps into the freezer, freeing himself from the pit.

Unfortunately, although the combination of Landon's ability to think like dear old dad and his decision to no longer wait for Hope to save him got him out of the pit, he's still only managed to make it to the prison world where Malivore is currently trapped. Despite his circumstances, at the end of the episode, Landon writes a letter that expresses his commitment to continue to look for a way out of the prison world no matter what and attaches it to the gate of the prison world's version of the Salvatore School.

Of course, without any magical powers, it's hard to know what Landon can actually do to free himself. But maybe his letter can make it into the right hands and Landon can find his way back to the real world and Hope after all. With Hope having given up on Landon and deeply mourning his loss, however, there's still the question of how she'll react when she realizes what Landon has been through after she stopped searching for him.

Legacies stars Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Aria Shahghasemi, Peyton Alex Smith, Matt Davis, Chris Lee, Ben Levin and Leo Howard. New episodes air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
