Lucifer's Lesley-Ann Brandt Brought Maze's Blades Home for Practice

Lucifer's Lesley-Ann Brandt (Mazikeen) "loved" learning how to wield a karambit.

The Mazikeen actor shared during the "Lucifer Q&A Panel with Lesley-Ann Brandt" hosted on StageIt that she didn't have any weapons training prior to Lucifer. She replied, "I learned how to use the karambits for the show." Brandt added that it was the show's choreographer in Season 1 who introduced her to Maze's iconic weapon. "When he started moving with it, it was just so beautiful with like little butterfly-like silver blade butterflies," she stated.

A karambit is a curved dagger-like weapon that's often used in Silat training/combat.

The actor shared that the choreographer told her that the "karambit has never really been used on TV, rarely in film." Brandt described the curved knife as something that moves like "an extension of your hand." She added, "Like you could slip in and hook someone in this side while you're stabbing someone on this side... Very brutal too, which I love, because Maze is such a brute. But no, I learned to… I took them home, I would play with them walking around the house and my husband would… 'Get away from me!'

She concluded by saying Maze's blades inspired her own weapon practice off-set too, noting, "Knives have become my thing now.”

Co-showrunner Joe Henderson recently shared that Maze will be exploring her feelings of rejection from God in the show's upcoming Season 5b, noting, "Maze was left with a really raw, open wound at the end of Season 4," Henderson said. "She finally found love [with Eve] and then had her heartbroken. So much of Season 5 is her dealing with rejection."

At the time of this writing, a release date for the second half of Season 5 has not been announced. Lucifer is currently filming its sixth and final season for the Devil-focused series. Brandt recently posted an emotional shoutout to co-star Tom Ellis (Lucifer) after the two completed their last scenes together for the show, writing that she had, "So many feels."

Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. The first half of Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
